Beat the Traffic+ Review
Thu, Oct 20 @ 6:28 AM
Nobody likes being stuck in traffic, but outside of knowing backroads specific to your location, there's not much drivers in urban or populous areas can do about it. Luckily, Beat the Traffic+, the four-dollar companion to Triangle Software's free app, is here to help, using the GPS power of your iOS device to show you the fastest possible route to your destination. How it works is simple: you can view real-time or predicted traffic patterns specific to your GPS location (routes are color-coded from green to red by order of speediness), which is convenient enough on its own. The "plus" comes in by allowing you to customize "My Traffic" locations that let you create and choose from a list of commonly-visited destination routes, view regularly updated surveillance shots from most highways, and use the forecast planner to pick the best roads for planning trips.Currently the app supports 34 major cities or metropolitan areas, and picks up construction, accident, or weather-related problems that might bring your trip to a grinding halt. The only catch is that these extra features, though initially free for two weeks, cost $19.99 a year after your trial period has expired. However, you can still access all the features available in "plus" with the free app -- albeit without the personalization. The bottom line. Whether you're a "plus" subscriber or not, though, Beat the Traffic is a pretty worthwhile app if you're an iPhone user who spends a lot of time behind the wheel.Review Synopsis Product:  Beat the Traffic+ 1.2.1 Company:  Triangle Software Contact:  http://beatthetraffic.com Price:  <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=ApuPaiKIpxg&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fbeat-thetraffic-plus%252Fid405597660%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30" target="itunes_store">$3.99</a> Requirements:  iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.1 or later Positives:  App is really easy to use. Includes a lot of unique and helpful features. Negatives:  Subscription service is only worthwhile if you travel a lot. You can't access all features outside of your GPS location. Score:  4 Great

Law & Apple: Samsung Wins, Fires Up New Lawsuit and HTC Loses Early Decision
Thu, Oct 20 @ 8:02 AM
As the major infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung in the United States begins to narrow its focus, Samsung begins maneuvering to block the sale of the iPhone 4S overseas. And HTC, which in May asked the International Trade Commission to ban the importation of the Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad in the United States, gets an answer -- though likely not the one they were hoping for. All of this and more in today's Law and Apple.Apple vs. SamsungU.S. District Judge Lucy Koh dismissed several of Apple's antitrust claims against Samsung, including the claim that Samsung misrepresented its intent to license certain patents on fair terms. According to the ruling, Apple can revise its complaint and resubmit the claims. This is a small win for Samsung, though of course it was hoping to have all of Apple's antitrust claims dismissed. Many of the more significant claims are still under consideration, and the fact that Apple can resubmit tweaked versions of the dismissed claims must be a disappointment for Samsung. And the elephant in the room remains, as Koh did not yet rule on the larger request of Apple to block Samsung from selling its Galaxy mobile devices in the United States.Samsung, apparently eager to escalate the legal battles between the two companies, opened new lawsuits in Japan, Australia, France, and Italy to block the sale of the new iPhone 4S in those countries.  We Are Only Hurting Ourselves. The legal battles between Apple and Samsung appear to be intensifying, though several analysts believe that a resolution is not only still possible, but just around the corner. Recent reports indicate that Apple will use Samsung to manufacture the alleged A6 processor chip for the next iPhone, a move which would underscore the fact that both companies need each other for continued success, and these legal disputes have the capacity to hurt the bottom lines of both companies, regardless of who wins and who loses.Apple vs. HTCHTC was swinging for the fences earlier this spring with a massive ITC claim against Apple that aimed to block the sale of iPods, iPhones, and iPads in the United States. The company may have just struck out, though, as ITC administrative judge Charles Bullock found "no violation" by Apple of the four HTC patents critical to the claim. The ruling stated that the HTC patents involving power management and phone dialing were in fact valid, but that Apple did not infringe on them in any way.In February, a full ITC committee will decide whether or not to uphold the administrative judge's opinion.Apple can still sell iOS devices in the United States. Phew. To the surprise of no one,  this ruling will allow the continued sale of the Apple mobile devices in the United States. Adrian writes the weekly Law & Apple column for MacLife.com. How to Restrict Functions in iOS
Thu, Oct 20 @ 1:01 PM
Restrictions in iOS work simliarly to Parental Controls in OS X. It's an easy way to restrict unauthorized users from accessing certain functions in iOS, and keep the kids away from inappropriate content. To begin, head over to Settings > General > Restrictions and tap "Enable Restrictions" to set a password and get started restricting functionality.1. Restricting Built-in AppsAfter enabling Restrictions, under the Allow section in the Restrictions settings, you will see switches for Safari, YouTube, Camera, FaceTime, iTunes, Ping, Installing Apps, and Deleting Apps.Flip the switch to turn off the selected functionality.Simply flip the switch from ON to OFF and the functionality will be disabled for the switched function. When the function is turned off, the application will be hidden from visibility on the Home Screen.2. Restricting ChangesIn addition to built-in applications, you can also restrict changes to Location, Accounts, and Find My Friends.Location-based restrictions are particularly important if you wish to disable certain location functions.Tapping on Location in the Allow Changes section will let you Allow or Disallow changes in order to prevent new apps from using location services. You can disable Location services completely, or on a per-application basis.Tapping on Accounts or Find My Friends will also allow you to Allow Changes or Don't Allow Changes for those functions. In this section, a purple location icon will appear next to an item that is currently using your location; a gray icon will appear beside items that have used location info in the past 24-hours.Scrolling down to the bottom of the page will let you change System Services settings. From this screen, you can disable Cell Network Search, Compass Calibration, Diagnostics & Usage, Location-based iAds, Setting Time Zone, and Traffic.3. Restricting ContentUnder the Allowed Content section, you can set restrictions for Ratings for Music & Podcasts, Movies, TV Shows, and Apps. Tapping on any of these functions will allow you to set a maximum rating to allow. In the Ratings For section, you can select the rating system to use; by default it will be set to your country. Also in this section, you can disable In-App Purchases, and set the time that purchases are allowed after the Restriction password has been entered. You can select 15 minutes, or immediately for the time that the password is required.4. Restricting Game CenterReduce Game Center functions with just a tap.The last options for Restrictions are the Game Center settings. In this section, you can disable multiplayer games and adding friends. Follow this article's author, Cory Bohon on Twitter.

Thursday Recap: AT&T Updates, iOS 5 Developer World Tour, Apple's Missing LTE
Thu, Oct 20 @ 1:49 PM
You made it through Wednesday and the weekend will be here soon enough, so give yourself a pat on the back! It was also a challenging day for some of Apple's partners, with a Swedish carrier predicting gloom and doom for Cupertino over the lack of LTE in its handsets, and AT&T swinging back and forth with good news about iPhone 4S activations and less good news for the last quarter overall. Here's what's making news for Thursday, October 20, 2011.iPhone 4S Includes Both GPS and Russian GLONASS SupportHere's a bit of trivia for iPhone 4S owners: Did you know your shiny new device comes with not two but but three methods of acquiring your position? Wi-Fi triangulation and the common GPS aside, the new device also quietly adds GLONASS, an acronym for the Russian GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema first launched in 1976. According to 9to5Mac, the Russkies created the system in order to reduce their reliance on U.S.-based GPS technology, but with the Cold War well behind us, it appears everyone gains by having both satellite signals beaming into our iPhone 4S -- and is likely to help expand the handset's domination into the former Soviet Union as well. With No New iPhone Over The Summer, AT&T Quarterly Profits DipOnce exclusive U.S. iPhone carrier AT&T is feeling a bit of a sting in their quarterly profits without a new Apple handset over the summer, even though the company passed the 100 million subscriber mark by adding an additional 2.1 million. AllThingsD is reporting wireless data revenue grew 18 percent to $857 million, with total revenue ringing the registers up to $31.5 billion, just shy of the $31.62 billion analysts were expecting. So how many iPhones did the company move last quarter? "Only" 2.7 million, which is their lowest level in more than a year.Swedish Carrier Predicts Apple Will Be "Run Over" Without 4G LTE9to5Mac is reporting on claims made by the senior vice president of Swedish carrier TeliaSonera over Apple's decision to ignore 4G LTE (at least for now) is a "bad mistake" that will open the company to being "run over by the others" -- meaning other handset makers who are tripping over themselves to adopt LTE early on. Of course, Apple has been here before with the original iPhone in 2007, which used the more available EDGE for wireless data rather than 3G, which came the following year.AT&T Activates One Million iPhone 4S HandsetsOn the heels of AT&T's dip in quarterly profits (see above), the company managed to find a silver lining in their dark cloud thanks to the iPhone 4S. The carrier announced that more than a million of Apple's new handsets were activated as of Tuesday, which marks AT&T's most successful iPhone launch ever. So, things are looking up for their next quarterly report due in January, at least...Apple Announces iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour 2011Now that iOS 5 is out in the wild, Apple has announced a nine-city world tour to help developers get the most out of the new technology. The iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour 2011 events kick off in Berlin, Germany on November 2 and wrap up in Austin, Texas on January 23, hitting several other cities in Europe, Asia, North and South America along the way. According to the company's website, the London event on November 7 and the New York City event on January 13 are already booked up, so you might want to register today if you want to get your foot in the door.Follow this article's author, J.R.
