Friday Recap: iPhone 4S Preorders Begin, Spring Planning LTE Switch, Talk to a Smurf!
Fri, Oct 7 @ 2:55 PM
It's Friday at last, and what a grueling week it has been. Many of you are probably groggy from staying up late (or getting up early) to preorder a new iPhone 4S, hung over from the "Let's talk iPhone" event or just plain bummed out about the loss of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. But don't despair -- let's recap the events for Friday, October 7 before we embrace the weekend.iPhone 4S Preorders BeginThe big story for today actually kicked off at 12:01am PST -- or rather, it was supposed to. Excited early adopters planning to preorder the new iPhone 4S were greeted by Apple's familiar yellow sticky instead, and even when the online store finally returned nearly 30 minutes later, error messages went off like fireworks. Meanwhile, those ordering on Verizon and new third carrier Sprint seemed to go off without a hitch and even direct orders via AT&T's website fared better.By the time dawn broke on the East Coast, Apple's servers were spinning like a top and ordering was a breeze. Hope everyone got theirs in -- some international locales are already showing a delay of a week or two, and the U.S. is likely to follow soon.Sprint Planning Massive LTE Network Switch Next YearThird-place carrier Sprint held a big shindig today as they basked in the glow of finally getting Apple's iconic handset, and according to Reuters, the company plans to spend "more money than it brings in" over the next few years to make the costly switch to 4G LTE. The plan would have Sprint forking out $7 billion for the extensive network upgrade, which is planned to begin in mid-2012, with the carrier essentially abandoning its already substantial investment in partner Clearwire. Something tells us Sprint knows Apple's 2012 handset will be a true 4G LTE device and they sure won't want to be left on the sidelines when that time comes. Steve Jobs Laid To Rest TodayAccording to The Wall Street Journal, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was laid to rest today in "a small private gathering," just two days after his passing on Wednesday. There are no public services planned, but CEO Tim Cook did note the company would be holding "a celebration of Steve's extraordinary life" for Apple staff sometime soon.Business Card Reader App Gets Cozy with LinkedInSHAPE Services may be best known for its popular IM+ app, but they've also pioneered the art of capturing business cards on your iPhone with Business Card Reader. The $4.99 app just got a bump to version 2.1 which adds native LinkedIn integration, including search, contact creation, contact information and picture import as well as improvements to the user interface and those always welcome bug fixes. Existing users can upgrade for free by downloading the 18MB app from the App Store.Samsung and Google Delay New Android LaunchThe Android world has been all pumped up about a joint Google and Samsung event planned for October 11, which is widely rumored to launch version 4.0 of the operating system, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich. According to AllThingsD, the companies have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event which was to be held in San Diego during the CTIA trade show out of respect for Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the companies said in a joint announcement on Friday. A classy move, especially considering the current bad blood between Apple and Samsung over patents right now.iTalk Smurf App Lets Anyone Talk Like A Magical Little Creaturezuuka, the publishers of the popular iStoryTime line of mobile children's book apps, launched a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch called iTalk Smurf. Available now in the App Store for only 99 cents, the app features Clumsy Smurf, who is able to repeat exactly what the user says with a funny and cute smurfy voice -- as well as save the results to an animated 3D-like video to your device's Camera Roll. The 17.3MB download requires iOS 4.1 or higher and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad -- but sadly no universal support for the latter.Follow this article's author, J.R. Amazing Breaker Review
Fri, Oct 7 @ 6:10 AM
Anyone can make a halfway decent iOS game these days, but to create a hit, there's three criteria: gorgeous graphics, replayability, and simple controls. Built around spectacular frozen sculptures that are quickly blown to bits, Amazing Breaker has this formula down to a science. Even as I'm writing this I want to play, but it took quite a few games to warm up to its unique gameplay. Controls are relatively easy to learn (criterion No. 1) but the game's puzzling objective and repetitive nature can be initially frustrating. Players are presented with beautifully intricate crystallized carvings (criterion No. 2) and given a series of bombs and a slingshot. After a few false starts, I quickly realized that I needed to strategically place the bombs for maximum destruction. Razing 90 percent of the object earns one of three stars and advancement to the next level, but the real challenge is complete annihilation, where the physics comes into play.If you've ever looked at an ice sculpture and thought, "I wish I had a bomb to throw at that," you'll love Amazing Breaker. To level the structure, every angle and ricochet of iPhone's 3.5-inch screen will be utilized to set up bomb "chains" to up the explosion ante. Most bombs do more than just explode, adding another level of strategy (and unlike Angry Birds, the order of the projectiles can be changed), so the game gets pretty challenging after just a few levels, as sculptures get more intricate and more bombs are introduced. It's just like Angry Birds, if the pigs were made of ice and all the birds blew up.The right placement of bombs and sequence of explosions will accomplish the bare minimum to advance to the next level, but I quickly found myself repeating boards (criterion No. 3) to get the last 2 or 3 percent of the ice sculpture I left behind. Only 100 percent destruction will get you the coveted third star, so you'll be restarting a lot (each time waiting through a just-long-enough-to-be-noticeable loading screen). It may be pretty now, but it won't be for very long. The bottom line. Amazing Breaker isn't the only "ice-smashing physics game" in the App Store, but you needn't download another.Review Synopsis Product:  Amazing Breaker 1.0.4 Company:  Dekovir, Inc. 5 Stories of How the Genius Bar Saved the Day
Fri, Oct 7 @ 8:30 AM
Got a problem we didn't cover? The Genius Bar can probably help—it helped these people.Having a problem with your Apple gear can be a lonely road of Googling, trolling the Apple Support Forums, or paging through Mac|Life hoping we address your exact problem. But if you live relatively close to an Apple Store, you can make a Genius Bar appointment. Eye-rolling name aside, the Geniuses can get hands-on, diagnose what's going on, and very often offer a fix on the spot. Our own Nic Vargus and Susie Ochs both have gotten great service at the Genius Bar, and so have these readers, who were kind enough to share their stories of how their day was (usually) saved—often at no charge. Thanks to everyone who wrote in! (More stories at maclife.com/geniuslove.) The Lion Roars TonightRecently, I was having a problem downloading the massive Lion installer on AT&T's DSL. I went to the Apple Store and was impressed that they immediately let me use their network to download the file, then walked me through a few of the new features and offered some additional assistance. The customer service at Apple Stores is second to none.—Ivan Rivera, Jr.Hooked UpI had an old 80GB iPod a year out of warranty replaced free of charge. The front part of my white MacBook keyboard area broke off, and they replaced that free of charge as well. I even had a jailbroken iPhone 3GS stop working, and the Genius Bar just gave me a new one, even though it was a week over warranty. I will never be switching back to a PC. Cheers to the Geniuses!—Jennifer StickleyOopsI took my wife's dead iPod nano in for repair. It couldn't be fixed, so they had to order another one for me. After no contact for a month, I went in to follow up (it's an hour drive away). The Genius showed me the work order, and explained why I hadn't heard that the replacement had been in the store for a week: they didn't record an area code for my phone number. Of course, my reply was, "I'm no Genius, but isn't that my email address there?" Not exactly out-of-the-box problem solving, but I still love Apple.—Brian WilliamsonYou Had Me at HelloI walked into the Apple Store with my fourth-gen iPod touch, which had some display problems. All I said was hello, and the Genius looked up the iPod's serial number, told me he'd be right back, and brought me a brand-new iPod touch, no questions asked. Another time I took in my MacBook when it had a hard drive failure. It was running Tiger at the time, and I asked the Genius if he could put Leopard on it for free. In the presence of other techs, he said no. But when I got my laptop back, it was running Leopard. Apple techs really raise the bar for great service.—Nik S.Awesome IndeedI was sitting outside when my iPad slipped out of its case and fell onto asphalt, shattering the screen. I took it to the Apple Store without even making an appointment and told them exactly what happened. They gave me a new one on the spot and even got it all set up for me so I was using it out of the store. It wasn't even covered by AppleCare. How awesome are they?—Gerald Ashlock

Free App Friday: For Your Entertainment
Fri, Oct 7 @ 2:06 PM
What do you do on your iPad these days? Do you play games? Keep track of your finances? Surf the web? And does anyone actually use that euphemism anymore? It feels like it's getting pretty dated…And you know what else is dated? Watching television on your TV. Yes, folks, the cool way to keep track of your favorite shows is to prop up the iPad on your knees while you're in bed and doze off to the sweet sounds of Meredith Grey's constant whining on Grey's Anatomy. And while you might know about ABC, NBC, HBO and TBS's official apps for the iPad, here are a few other free apps that exist just for your entertainment.Crackle Need a random selection of free movies and television shows to sift through? Crackle's got them. How it works is not a question that we ask. All we do is nod our heads and appreciate the free nature of this iPad app. But just as an aside, there's ads! Because without ads, you wouldn't have things for free.CrunchyrollMy favorite roll at sushi restaurants is a crunchy spicy tuna roll. My favorite app for watching nonsensical Japanese anime is Crunchyroll. If you put the two together, you've got a pretty perfect night with a stomach full of sushi and a brain full of anime.SideReel I've recently started watching a ton of television shows on DVD and network cable, and I'm having a difficult time tracking which episodes I've watched and what I've yet to see.  SideReel lets me keep track of seasons, episodes, and other series with the same name. This free app also provides links to the iTunes and Amazon rental pages for each episode, and gives you a breakdown of what's on TV for the week.
