Bigstream iOS Video Streamer Review
Mon, Oct 10 @ 5:30 AM
Static in the streamWhen Apple announced the video-out feature for the iPhone, we rejoiced. Finally, we could watch YouTube cat videos on the big screen from our iPhones -- albeit with the addition of an expensive cable. Okay, so maybe we didn't rejoice that much. Cables are a pain. Grabbing one so you can watch something on the TV…and then only being able to stand a few feet away from said TV is pretty much a bummer all around. Bigstream's um, Bigstream (yes, the company and product have the same name) takes the cable out of the equation. You add a dongle to the bottom of your iOS device, hook the receiver up to the TV, and boom -- you're streaming video and audio wirelessly through the air. It sounds pretty awesome, but unfortunately the actual execution is worse than Brett Ratner's X-Men film.No wires, but lots of static. For starters, the dongle is huge. It has an internal battery that takes up most of the space, but when connected to an iPhone or iPod touch, it looks like you taped a third-gen iPod nano to your device. But that's minor next to its serious hardware limitations. The receiver uses composite video cables to attach to the TV. Composite, as in the stuff you used to hook up your VCR in the 1980s. While we applaud Bigstream's desire to work with every TV on the market since the Reagan era, the picture quality sucks. We live in an HD world now, and everything else just looks dated. Most noticeably, solid colors fluctuated -- but that was nothing compared to Bigstream's biggest problem: static. Video was rife with static lines if we stood more than three feet away. In fact, the quality of the video degrades rather quickly as you move away from the receiver. Which, of course, defeats the purpose of using a wireless system in the first place. At $119, Bigstream's iffy video quality doesn't compare well to the Apple TV, but the device does have its own advantages, mainly that you don't need a Wi-Fi network to use it and the latency is pretty low. Plus it's pretty much plug-and-play. But ultimately the poor video quality makes those pluses irrelevant. The bottom line. If you're looking to zzzztscchrratcchhchc get your iOS device's zzzttsssccrrhhhtttttzzzz videos and content zzzsssttrrttzzzcc on a TV, you're better off buying a cable from Apple -- or for $99, even an Apple TV.Review Synopsis Product:  Bigstream Company:  Bigstream Contact:  getbigstream.com Price:  $119 Requirements:  iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, iPod touch, iPod nano 3rd generation or later Positives:  Plug-and-play wireless operation. Negatives:  Static-filled video. Expensive. Huge dongle. Score:  1 Awful

iPhone 4S Racks Up A Million Customers In 24 Hours
Mon, Oct 10 @ 6:11 AM
So much for underwhelming! Apple announced on Monday morning that the new iPhone 4S has already topped one million preorders -- and that's just in the first 24 hours. It may look like an iPhone 4 and quack like an iPhone 4, but the iPhone 4S is anything but fowl.Apple issued an early morning press release on Monday to tout iPhone 4S preorder numbers, which kicked off in the wee hours of the morning on Friday, October 7. Despite an initial lack of enthusiasm by members of the press and even some iPhone fans anticipating a true iPhone 5 at last week's "Let's talk iPhone" event, the new model has topped even its predecessor in first day sales.Last year, the iPhone 4 racked up 600,000 preorders in a single day, but the iPhone 4S has smoked that previous record with a whopping one million preorders in a single day. Not bad for a device many claimed to be less than excited about, right?"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."The iPhone 4S is already sold out on all three U.S. carriers and most everywhere else around the world, with the Apple online stores showing one to two weeks for availability -- but fear not, the shopping frenzy kicks into stage two this Friday, October 14 at 8am local time when the retail stores open and you'll have your chance to kill and entire day waiting in line to get your hands on one.Follow this article's author, J.R. How to Sync Multiple iOS Devices
Mon, Oct 10 @ 6:36 AM
My family has loads of iOS devices, and I can't figure out the best way to sync everything without causing a mess.Managing apps on your iOS device can be confusing. How many Macs can I have an app on? How many iPhones can I have my apps on? Here's the skinny. You can authorize five computers with your iTunes account. That's five of any computer -- Mac or Windows -- that's compatible with iTunes. If your family has four computers, you can all use the same account on those computers. You can have that account on as many iOS devices as you can put on your credit card. Potentially, you can have five computers and 50 iPads using the same iTunes account. The apps you buy can live on five authorized computers and an unlimited number of iOS devices. Here's where it gets weird. When syncing an iOS device, you should always sync it with the same computer. Always. When you start using more than one computer to sync, that's when things get wacko. Everyone in the house should either use the same computer to sync with, or they should sync on their own personal computers with the same iTunes account as their iOS device. Once you settle that, don't change it unless you have to.

Monday Recap: Universal Facebook Goes Live, RIP Qwikster, Steve Jobs Memorial Announced
Mon, Oct 10 @ 2:14 PM
It was both a blessing and a curse to be an Apple fan last week, with the iPhone 4S announcement immediately overshadowed the death of co-founder Steve Jobs. But now, the second full week of October is in full swing, with more than a million preordered iPhone 4S units headed to customers this Friday. Here's what else is making news for Monday, October 10, 2011.Netflix Reverses Course, Kills Qwikster In Its SleepIf there's one internet company with an identity crisis right now, it's Netflix. According to a posting on The Netflix Blog by CEO Reed Hastings, the company has reversed their decision to split the streaming and DVD services up, with the optical discs being shuffled off to a new site called Qwikster. Those plans are now dead, with everything staying put under the Netflix shingle. However, the CEO didn't say what will be happening to the company's plan to start offering video games via Qwikster, so there could still be some blowback yet to come from that camp.Verbs IM App Goes UniversalStill looking for a slick IM app for your iPhone? How about one that also does double duty on your iPad as well? Look no further than Verbs IM, which is celebrating the arrival of a universal version 2.2 with full iPad support with a price drop to 99 cents for a limited time only. The app delivers GTalk, AIM, MobileMe and Facebook IM chat in a slick, clean interface, but take note: You'll need to shell out $4.99 via in-app purchase if you want Pro features like push notifications or keeping your account logins valid for up to seven days.iPhone 4S Hands-On Video Reveals 2x Speed Increase Is RealApple's Phil Schiller gleefully touted a 2x increase in speed with the iPhone 4S over the previous model, but was it all just marketing chatter? Apparently not, with MacRumors reporting on the first hands-on video from AppVV.com, where the handset scored 89567 using BrowserMark, a Mobile Safari-based benchmark tool. By comparison, an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 clocked in at a poky 44856 -- just a hair under the promised 2x speed boost. Sounds like we'll all be flying come October 14!OS X Lion, iPhoto and iTunes Updates Should Appear Before WednesdayiCloud is rolling out to users on Wednesday alongside iOS 5, but according to AppleInsider, Apple will be rolling out some necessary updates ahead of time to get you ready. Japanese blog Macotakara claims that OS X Lion 10.7.2 and a new version of iTunes are both due either Monday or Tuesday, but they failed to mention that iPhoto will also need an update to support the iCloud Photo Stream feature. Developers have been beta testing iTunes 10.5, but no one knows for sure if that will actually be the version pushed out this week to support iCloud. Stay tuned!Apple Will Celebrate Steve Jobs with Private October 19 EventAccording to 9to5Mac, Apple CEO Tim Cook has fired off an internal email to employees, announcing the company's plans for a private celebration of co-founder Steve Jobs' life which will take place on October 19 in the outdoor amphitheater on the Cupertino campus. The full email can be found by hitting up the link above, which opens with Cook confessing, "I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week." While it's hard for all of us as fans, you can only imagine how difficult it will be for those who actually worked side by side with the man.In related news, Bloomberg today confirmed that Jobs died at his home in Palo Alto and a death certificate released this afternoon listed the cause of death as respiratory arrest caused by a "metastatic pancreas  neuroendocrine tumor." The time of death was listed as 3pm PST on October 5; no autopsy was performed and Jobs was buried at a "non-denominational cemetery in Santa Clara County" on October 7.Facebook Update with Universal iPad Support Now LiveFacebook has just rolled out a big iOS version 4.0 update, including the addition of native support for the iPad as part of the newly universal app. There are seriously a huge amount of changes noted with the release, so it's probably easier to just head to the App Store and get downloading rather than sitting here reading this. Seriously… just do it.Follow this article's author, J.R. Bookwalter on Twitter
