Man arrested in Shanghai supermarket bombing (AFP)

SHANGHAI (AFP) – Police in China said Tuesday they had detained a man accused of detonating a remote-controlled bomb in a Shanghai supermarket, destroying several lockers but causing no injuries.

The suspect, identified only by his surname Qu, was arrested three hours after the bomb exploded at about 2:00 pm on Monday, police said in a statement. Police said the man had confessed to the attack.

The statement did not hint at a possible motive, but authorities across China have been very concerned about the possibility of public unrest stemming from a range of grievances, with soaring inflation topping the list.

China sees thousands of protests and other public disturbances each year, often linked to anger over official corruption, government abuses and the illegal seizure of land for development. But bomb attacks are rare.

In May, a disgruntled farmer was blamed for a triple bomb attack on government offices in the eastern city of Fuzhou that killed four people including the attacker.

The farmer was apparently frustrated with the lack of progress in a legal case he had filed with authorities, state media reported, without providing further details.

Staff at the Shanghai supermarket, a three-storey RT-Mart, began evacuating people after an employee received a call at 1:10 pm from a man threatening to blow up the store, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing the local government.

Employees found a suspicious device in a locker on the ground floor for customer use, but the police bomb disposal team failed to arrive before it exploded, the report said.

"I was startled by a deep and heavy booming sound at 2:00 pm," Pan Huayi, who runs a tea store near the supermarket, told the newspaper.

"It sounded like great thunder strikes as it was raining hard. I didn't realise that it was an explosion until people rushed out of the supermarket."

The blast damaged a nine-square-metre (100-square-foot) area, the report said.

General Motors says 1H China sales up 5.3 pct (AP)

SHANGHAI – General Motors Co.'s ventures in China sold a record 1.27 million vehicles in the first half of the year, the company says, though growth slowed sharply from the double-digit pace of recent years.

Sales by GM and its local ventures rose 5.3 percent in January-June from the same period last year, as its mini-vehicle venture SAIC-GM-Wuling's sales dropped 5.4 percent to 641,324 units, the company reported Tuesday.

GM's sales in June rose 9.9 percent over the year before, to 193,878 vehicles, it said.

Minivan sales had been a major driver of growth in 2009-2010, thanks to government incentives that expired early this year. The lack of incentives, rising fuel costs and traffic restrictions in Beijing all have sapped vitality of the world's biggest auto market in recent months.

Domestic automakers have likewise suffered from lapsing of subsidies for energy-efficient small cars, while big foreign name brands have been gaining market share.

GM's flagship joint venture, Shanghai GM, saw sales jump 25 percent from the year before to a record 600,002 units, GM said. Strong demand for the Cruze and Sail small cars pushed Chevrolet sales up 14.5 percent to 297,841 vehicles, while Buick sales jumped 28 percent to 324,919 vehicles.

As increasingly affluent Chinese trade up, sales of sport-utility and luxury models are soaring.

Cadillac's sales surged 88 percent to 14,078 units in the first half, the company said.

China to pour $9bn into Brazil this year: report (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) – China is expected to pour $9 billion into Brazil this year, with half for investment in the country's high-tech sector, state media said Tuesday, citing a senior Brazilian trade official.

Chinese investment in Brazil's technology industries will hit $4.5 billion this year, Alessandro Teixeira, Brazil's deputy minister of development, industry and foreign trade, said in comment carried by the China Daily.

Capital from China had previously been poured into the farm and mining sectors, and Brasilia has been urging Chinese companies to invest in non-raw material industries to help balance the country's economy, the report said.

"Seventy percent of the trade between Brazil and China is basically commodities," Teixeira said. "But we are keen to improve commercial relations in medium and high-end technology."

He added that both governments had reached an agreement to boost Chinese investment in the high-tech sector.

China has in recent years become Brazil's largest trading partner, overtaking the United States, and in 2010 was the largest investor in the South American nation, pumping in about $30 billion.

Two-way trade has grown from $2.3 billion in 2000 to $56.4 billion in 2010, according to Brazilian officials.

Chinese telecom equipment makers ZTE and Huawei Technologies Co have invested heavily in Brazil in recent years, the China Daily said.

ZTE has an industrial park in Hortolandia, close to Sao Paulo. The company's sales revenue in Brazil reached $600 million last year and is expected to grow to $1 billion this year, the report added.

In April, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said during a visit to China that Huawei had announced it will build a research centre in the Sao Paulo area, with total investment of $300-400 million.

China silencing Uighurs two years after protests: Amnesty (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) – China has jailed dozens of ethnic Uighurs in the far western region of Xinjiang for speaking out about riots in the regional capital two years ago, Amnesty International said on Tuesday, part of a broader campaign against voices of dissent nationwide.

In July 2009, the capital city of Urumqi was rocked by violence between majority Han Chinese and minority Uighurs that killed nearly 200 people. Many of the Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighurs, who call Xinjiang home, chafe at Beijing's rule.

Since then, China has executed nine people it blamed for instigating the riots, detained and prosecuted hundreds of others and ramped up spending on security, according to state media and overseas rights groups.

Last month, Kazakhstan extradited a Uighur schoolteacher who had been granted U.N. refugee status to face charges of terrorism in China, brushing off concerns he could be tortured and that the charges against him were trumped up.

"The government is not only still muzzling people who speak out about July 2009, it is using its influence outside its borders to shut them up," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty's director for the Asia-Pacific.

"The general trend toward repression that we see all over China is particularly pronounced in Xinjiang, where the Uighur population has become a minority in its own homeland."

China is in the midst of a sweeping campaign against rights activists, following calls on-line for Arab-style "Jasmine protests" in China which have spooked Beijing.

Other Uighurs have been jailed for speaking to foreign reporters about the events two years ago, or for discussing the unrest on Uighur websites.

"Attacking every Uighur who speaks freely is no way to resolve the underlying grievances that led to the 2009 protests in the first place," Zarifi added.

"The Chinese government has to listen to the grievances of the Uighur community and address their demands to have their rights respected and their culture protected."

ALWAYS ON GUARD

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that while Xinjiang was generally stable and its people happy, it remained threatened by separatists, who Beijing accuses of wanting to set up an independent state called East Turkistan.

"We are always on our guard against the damaging activities of splitists," Hong told a regular news briefing in Beijing.

Xinjiang is strategically vital to China and Beijing has shown no sign of loosening its grip.

A vast swathe of territory, accounting for one-sixth of China's land mass, Xinjiang holds oil, gas and coal deposits and borders Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Central Asia.

Dilxat Raxit of the Germany-based World Uyghur Congress said the two-year anniversary of the rioting had been marked by even tighter security.

"Uighurs are scared to go outside today lest they get picked up by the police just for being in a group of three or four people. They are choosing to stay at home," he said by telephone.

Since the unrest, China has turned its attention to boosting development in Xinjiang and providing greater job opportunities, especially for Uighurs, to try and address some of the root causes of the violence.

But the government has also installed some 40,000 surveillance cameras in Urumqi and increased by more than half this year's regional security budget, to 2.89 billion yuan ($447 million), according to state media.

Xinjiang's Communist Party boss, Zhang Chunxian, visited a night market on Monday, the government said, in a show of ethnic unity and to demonstrate normalcy has returned to Urumqi.

U.S. hails victory in raw materials case versus China (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Trade Representative's office on Tuesday welcomed what it called a "significant victory" in a World Trade Organization dispute over Chinese export restrictions on raw materials used for a variety of industrial products.

"China's extensive use of export restraints for protectionist economic gain is deeply troubling," Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in a statement

"Today's panel report represents a significant victory for manufacturers and workers in the United States and the rest of the world," he said.

One dead, 20 hurt at Beijing metro station: state media (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) – A 13-year-old boy was killed and over 20 others injured Tuesday when an escalator in a Beijing underground station suddenly reversed direction during the busy rush hour, state press said.

The incident took place shortly after 9:30 am at the Beijing Zoo station on line 4, Beijing MTR Corporation said in a statement, attributing the accident to "equipment failure".

Xinhua news agency said the accident occurred when an escalator suddenly reversed direction, sending more than 20 commuters falling over each other.

The dead boy, who was with his father, was crushed beneath a pile of passengers, it said.

Two people were injured seriously, including the boy's father, who was in intensive care at hospital.

An investigation has been launched, the MTR Corporation said.

Police declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

China's New Wave of Digital Political Sex Scandals (Time.com)

By ZHANG YILAN / ECONOMIC OBSERVER / WORLDCRUNCH Zhang Yilan / Economic Observer / Worldcrunch – 2?hrs?28?mins?ago

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in the Economic Observer.

A new form of public entertainment has also landed in China: the digital political sex scandal. The starring role, as always, goes to a respectable, married middle-aged man in an important position. The script includes the usual wealth of spicy details to prolong the pleasure.

Take the hapless Xie Zhiqiang, director of Jiangsu province's Bureau of Health. Someone told him that e-mails and texting were old hat and that he should get into Twitter-style microblogging. They neglected to mention that his updates would be visible to everyone. Xie's communications with his mistress, a married woman, were laid bare for all to see, including the meeting time, hotel-room number and preliminary discussions of what they'd be busy doing. For the delighted readers, it was a carnival. Not only that, but Xie told his paramour to bring along any receipts she had so he could get them refunded. (See the top 10 Twitter controversies.)

The municipal government and the commission for discipline promptly intervened, immediately suspending Xie from his position and placing him under investigation for corruption. Online supporters expressed sympathy for the unfortunate bureaucrat, convinced he was truly in love with the woman, and just an idiot when it came to new technology. Some were even inclined to forgive his attempts to claim expenses with his dodgy invoices.

In another case, Liu Ning, a section chief in the local administration of the city of Guangzhou, got in the habit of joining Internet chat rooms in which participants are naked, but their faces are hidden. As you might guess, in Liu's case his face was clearly visible. Embarrassment is painful but rarely fatal.

Then there's the case of Han Feng, director of the Tobacco Monopoly Bureau in Guangxi province, who was using his elevated status to enjoy the favors of no fewer than six female subordinates. However, a disloyal husband should always beware of revenge. Han's private diary mysteriously found its way online, dripping with saucy details. After each encounter with one of his ladies, he wrote a blow-by-blow account - what he called his hunting bounty. These appeared on the Web, and became very popular reads. (Healthland: "Online Cheaters Still Prefer Real-World Infidelity.")

Going back to Xie's situation, while many Westerners would think right away of recently disgraced former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner, the Chinese thought first of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Looking back, we understand that in party politics, a President's moral flaws will be ruthlessly attacked by the opposition party. The U.S. Congress started impeachment proceedings, and the Republicans were eager to kick Clinton out.

But at a crucial juncture, Hillary Clinton saved her husband by publicly supporting him, so changing the minds of those who had been in favor of his ouster. Clinton kept his job not because Americans accept lax moral standards in their officials. On the contrary, because of the media muckraking in party politics, the public sets a very high moral threshold in selecting officials. And even more importantly, in the Clinton affair, this "philandering" President was not guilty of abusing his powers: Lewinski did not get a job in the White House after her internship ended. (See photos from the Anthony Weiner scandal.)

By contrast, Xie's affair has provided some conclusive evidence that this director-valentine offered to reimburse his lover's invoices for personal purchases. This is corruption. Most people who sympathize with him are basing their reasoning on their presumption that Xie is indeed corrupt, but not to an extreme degree. He was only trying to cheat on a few expense claims. The biggest grief would be that this kind of tolerance becomes the common public attitude.

SportCaster Review
Tue, Oct 25 @ 6:08 AM
Even without the Yankees in the playoffs and an NBA regular season, it's pretty much a perfect time to be a sports fan. Nelson Cruz broke the MLB record for most home runs and RBIs in a playoff series, Tom Brady has somehow found yet another gear, and Jaromir Jagr is back on the ice at 39 years old. And with all of that great action filling the days, fantasy die-hards still have to find time to manage multiple teams.Whether your squad is playoff-bound or your star player is saddled on the sidelines, there are any number of iPhone apps to keep track of touchdowns, goals, and penalties. But committed fantasy owners need more than just stats and play-by-play -- and they should definitely consider downloading SportCaster. Casual fans, not so much.On the surface, the app offers little benefit over ESPN ScoreCenter or Yahoo! Sportacular -- that is, rudimentary stats, scores, and standings -- but SportCaster's strength is not in numbers. Rather, words are what sets it apart from the pack, as inside each game is a "Conversation" tab that collects tweets from all corners of the Twitterverse. And this isn't just mindless hashtag stuff: feeds from players, teams, analysts, and local sportscasters populate the feed, more than making up for the app's surprising lack of play-by-play.Non-fantasy freaks, however, probably won't see the value in sifting through dozens of tweets -- there aren't any advanced filters for content -- just to find out how far Rian Lindell's last field goal sailed. SportCaster clearly isn't meant for nonchalant fans; its target audience is face-painting fantasy addicts who follow Teemu Selänne's post-game press comments and want to digest as much news and commentary as possible about the day's action. Who knew the little blue Twitter bird was so macho? The bottom line. When Tom Brady threw his fourth interception against the Bills in week 3, fantasy owners reading SportCaster could have followed the whole scene -- right down to any inappropriate post-game comments. Let's see a Monday morning box score do that.Review Synopsis Product:  SportCaster 2.5 Company:  OneLouder Contact:  http://onelouder.com Price:  <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=ApuPaiKIpxg&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fsportcaster-football-hockey%252Fid455388588%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30" target="itunes_store">Free</a> Requirements:  iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.0 or later Positives:  Packed with information and unique in-game analysis. Powerbag Charging Backpack Review
Tue, Oct 25 @ 7:45 AM
An electrifying way to carry your gearI kinda have a thing for bags. I know exactly what I want from them, but it's so hard to find one that does everything a gadget-hauling nerd like me could wish for. But if I ever get to design my own backpack someday, it's going to look an awful lot like the Powerbag.Right off the bat, it dazzles by offering an ingeniously designed, built-in charging system. That's right, a battery is built into the actual backpack, and it's just awesome to use. Inside a small pouch on the side are built-in micro USB, mini USB, and 30-pin Apple cords—just tuck your device in there, press the power button on the backpack for two seconds, and the 3000mAh battery starts pumping juice into your device. There's even a light-up power indicator on the backpack that briefly shows how much charge is left in your battery, as well as a tablet pouch in the medium exterior pocket that's perfect for an iPad—complete with loops that let you run a charging cord to the battery's USB port.Hidden power lurks inside this bag…for your iDevices and more! When it's time to charge up your battery, the outside of the backpack has a power port for the included AC cord, so you just plug in your backpack overnight and away she goes. (If your devices are connected inside the bag, they'll charge first.) You can also easily snap the battery out of its casing and charge it separately if you can't leave your bag just lying around.Looking at this well-built backpack, you'd never know it was packed with power. Its clean, modern lines make it unobtrusively fashionable, and everything is well padded, extremely comfortable, and sturdily constructed. It's one seriously well-built bag. There's one caveat—the entry-level backpack that we reviewed is a bit short on interior pouches, and it could really use an exterior "quick grab" pouch for things you don't want to rummage for, like subway tickets. Fortunately, you can get those things by spending another $30 on the "deluxe" model of this backpack (not tested), which includes a 6000mAh battery as well. Also, because MacBooks only charge via a MagSafe connection—and Apple sues companies that use its patented MagSafe connectors—you can't charge your MacBook with this bag. (Hypermac.com sells an interesting workaround, if you're interested.)The bottom line. A cleverly designed, well-made backpack that'll charge up to four devices at once? Yes, please!Review Synopsis Product:  Powerbag Company:  fūl Inc. Contact:  mypowerbag.com Price:  $139.99 Requirements:  iDevice or USB-chargeable device that you want to carry around and charge. Positives:  Ingenious, built-in battery and charging cables. Cool charging light. Well-designed and well-built backpack. Negatives:  Needs a few more interior pouches and a "quick grab" exterior pocket. Can't charge MacBooks (Apple's "fault"). Score:  4.5 Excellent

App Showdown: Photo Editors
Tue, Oct 25 @ 10:34 AM
With iOS 5, iPhone users finally have native photo editing. But Apple kept things simple, so all you get is rotate, crop, red eye removal, and auto-enhance doing its thing. Prior to this small selection there was nothing, so the App Store is packed full of alternate cameras and photo editing apps for your shutterbug delights.Adobe Photoshop Express (Free/Universal)A dead simple interface makes this easyPhoto editing stalwart Adobe got into the game with Photoshop Express and their app is a decent entrant. Choose between taking a picture and loading one in from your camera roll to get started, then you get two more choices -- tap the arrow to share the picture on Twitter, Facebook or Photoshop.com or tap the pencil to start editing.Drop downs say it allFour fairly obvious buttons cross the top of the app and four more cross the bottom. The Crop button does what it says but it also allows straightening, rotating, or flipping photos. Adjust the color saturation or exposure by tapping the next button, make it black and white, change the tint or adjust the contrast. These adjust as you slide your finger horizontally across the screen, the changes denoted by number or on a color bar.Nice color palette, no?More artistic effects include a sketch adjustment, soften or sharpen the focus, and (if you buy the $4.99 add-on) reduce noise. Photoshop Express also includes seven color filters such as Pop that makes four copies and tints them all differently, Rainbow that splashes ROYGBIV across your picture, Soft Black & White and more. Choose borders to add frames or ragged contact sheet style edging. Save your picture to the camera roll then share it if you like though your options here are pretty limited. We hoped for more filters from the photo top dawgPhotoshop Express is well done, free, and works fairly well delivering lots of edits within its simple UI. More sharing options would be nice and the add-ons (noise reduction, a timer, and multiburst shots) aren't really worth five dollars, but overall it's a solid performance from the leader in photo editing software.Instagram (Free/iPhone)Cats still rule the interwebzThe darling of the Internet, Burbn, Inc.'s Instagram is either a free camera app packed with social sharing or it's a social media app based around pictures. Either way, if you do a lot of sharing, you most likely are familiar with this one. First you set up your Instagram account then link to various social sites and find your friends.109 people like a girl in the restroomYou first open the app to your feed. These are people whose photos you follow. Or expand your horizons beyond friends by tapping the Popular button. There stroll through a gallery of pictures beloved by the Instagram masses. Tap a picture and it opens bigger and you can like it, comment on it, or choose to follow this person's photo life.1977 dog likes filters, not catsThe middle button says Share, opening the camera. Add a frame by tapping the square in the upper left, a tear drop in the upper right pops in a pinchably  adjustable tilt shift focal point, and the X takes you back to the Popular gallery. You can also add pictures from the camera roll. The eye in the lower right turns on the filters. Nicely, these filters can be applied live, so if you don't have to catch a pic on the fly, you can choose between Lomo effect or the Toaster filter and more before snapping..Tiltshifting photo of world's creepiest dollApprove your picture, then you're taken to a screen to title it, enable geotagging, and determine where you'll share. Instagram has Twitter, Facebook, Email, Flickr, Tumblr, Foursquare, and Posterous options built in so no one has to miss out.Sharing galoreThe news button lets you see the pictures your friends and those you're following have liked. The Profile button will allow you to adjust your sharing settings, pick a new profile picture for yourself, and do other under the hood stuff. As far as editing pictures goes, Instagram has seventeen filter options and each comes with its own specialized frame, plus there are the tilt shift and rotate options. As a photo editor, it feels less robust than Photoshop Express, but for sharing there's no competition between the two.Camera+ ($0.99/iPhone)tap tap tap has something remarkable going on with Camera+. If you're looking for a camera with features, this one will fit the bill. The app opens directly to the camera where the digital zoom slider is visible. Tap the screen and a pinkish square appears. Tap it a second time and a pinkish circle appears within the square.Adjust focus and exposure, separately for best resultsDrag the circle about to get the best exposure applied to the whole picture while the square sets a certain focal point. With two finger action, great pictures are a snap. After the shutter goes off, Camera+ saves your shots to the app's Lightbox for editing. The Lightbox is where you do your workTap a photo here and you get an X to delete, a magnifying glass to enlarge and four more buttons. Save sends it to your camera roll, Info provides EFIX data including date, location, exposure, f-stop and more, and Share lets you upload to Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter as well as email and MMS. But Edit is where the magic happens.Tons of editing magic all the way throughTwo rows of buttons appear across the bottom. The top row are controlled by the bottom five. Scenes allows you to sixteen lighting conditions or subjects (improve your food snaps!). Adjust flips and rotates; Crops gives you nine pre-set options including the Golden Ratio plus freeform photo trimming. All kinds of filters packed in hereFX Effects delivers 27 filters (with nine more for sale) and each comes with an Intensity slider for more fine grain control. Best of all, each effect is recorded in the Info panel so you can revisit a photo to recreate the same effect on other pictures.  The info button gives you the goodsEditing photos after the fact is one thing, but Camera+ helps you out during the taking. Tap the gear next to the shutter button and choose between the Stablilizer, a Timer, or a Burst of rapid-fire shots. Nor is the app limited to photos taken within it. From the Lightbox tap the boxed gear wheel to open your camera roll for quick import. Camera+ is a sweet app we've taken many a good photo with and we were completely set to fully and whole-heartedly give it the prize. Until we tried the next app.PictureShow ($1.99/iPhone)It seems with each app we introduce, more features are added. graf's PictureShow goes hog wild. Two buttons greet you when you open it: start shooting or import from the camera roll. Tap the shutter button to shoot or tap the lens kit to the far right to take quad shots and more fancy types. The gear next to the shutter button gives you your timer, a grid, and sequence shots.Lotta teeny tiny buttons thereBut PictureShow is just getting started. Once you've taken or imported your picture eight tiny buttons cross the bottom of the app. Tap Style and pick from 23 frames, 10 light exposures, 13 noise filters, and adjustable vignette framing. Tap Special to  drop in tilt shifting or HDR after-effects (both with adjustable sliders for fine-grained control). Tap Color to slide-adjust the red, green, and blue, as well as brightness and contrast. Transform offers cropping in five ratios and a freehand option plus flipping the picture along the X and Y axis.So many different styles you can applyYou can add text to your photo by tapping on that button, and here you can alter the color, size, and alignment of fourteen different fonts. Finally, the kicker, PictureShow has the name of your photo style up top. Tap the name to access 45 preset filters such as LomoGraphy, BlueVintage, IndigoHalo, Noir, and dozens more. These filters go on and on, on top of everything elseFlick your finger up or down the picture to change styles in the full-screen view or hit the shuffle button to pick a random style. And if you tweak your own style and love it, tap the heart to save that particular picture recipe.Flick up or down to see the next full screen filterPictureShow also includes sharing at Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, tumblr, and Blogger, as well as saving to your camera roll or emailing the photo to someone, because after all the work you do, these pictures are crying out to be shared.Share and share alikeDevelopingIf you're looking for the full package of sharing and editing, look no further than PictureShow. The app is feature rich, infinitely customizable, fun to play around with, and hits the vast majority of sharing options. It could almost replace Apple's Camera app as our go-to picture taker. Camera+ runs a close second as far as features go, though it offers fewer than PictureShow and even fewer sharing options. Instagram is nice for sharing but rather limited in its palette. Tue, Oct 25 @ 2:28 PM
Does it feel like a long week to anyone else? Yeah, we know it's only Tuesday, but still… the weekend can't come soon enough! The week has brought bad news for both Netflix and Amazon (both taking a hit after reporting third-quarter results), but there are plenty of other things happening as well. Take a look at what you might have missed for this Tuesday, October 25, 2011.Apple's Television Spearheaded By iTunes Creator Jeff Robbin?Apple co-founder Steve Jobs lived to realize his dream of taking on the smartphone and tablet markets, but he may have left behind a legacy in the living room as well. According to Bloomberg, the company's iPod and iTunes guru, Jeff Robbin, has been put in charge of the Jobs' final creation, an Apple-branded television set. It's been widely reported that Jobs told official biographer Walter Isaacson that he had "finally cracked" that elusive goal with "the simplest user interface you could imagine." Analysts are predicting a true Apple TV could be introduced in late 2012 or early 2013. Would you like our credit card number now…?Apple TV Gets 4.4.2 Update, Resolves Updating ProblemsSpeaking of the Apple TV, that little black box hasn't been pushed aside quite yet. MacRumors is reporting the second-generation device has received a third update this month, version 4.4.2, which appears to clear up problems with the 4.4.1 update released last week. Apple suggests resetting all settings on the device prior to updating, but recognizes "that this is an inconvenience" and apologies.Veteran FTP Software Fetch Bumped To Version 5.7There are plenty of ways to access FTP servers on the Mac, but one of the oldest is still the best: Fetch, who released a new version 5.7 update this week. Among the laundry list of changes are improved compatibility with OS X Lion as well as better control over files, monitoring the progress of transfers and support for syncing Fetch shortcuts between computers using Dropbox. Unfortunately, in a sign of the times, Fetch 5.7 requires an Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. Fetch 5.5 and 5.6 users who purchased after January 28, 2009 are eligible for a free update; older version upgrades are $10 and a new license is $29 from either the company's website or the Mac App Store.Rumor: LTE iPhone Targeted for 2012?There's little doubt that Apple is working on a 4G LTE version of the iPhone, and many expect it to arrive as early as next year, when the carriers finally roll out across the country. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple will be among the members of "the LTE club" in 2012 alongside Nokia, RIM and Sony Ericsson. Third-place U.S. carrier Sprint is planning its own LTE rollout next year, with 15 devices already planned for release at the same time. Could the iPhone 5 be one of them?Macworld Expo Rebrands, Adds iWorld to "Ultimate iFanEvent"We've been wondering when registration for the 2012 Macworld Expo would open, and it turns out that today was that day. Unfortunately, this year event hosts IDG World Expo has done away with the early bird free passes (they're now $25 until December 1), but the show is expanding its horizons as "the ultimate iFanEvent" which is now rebranded as Macworld/iWorld to incorporate more iOS into the mix. The three day event kicks off on January 26, 2012 and promises tech talks, music, film and more. Will MacLife.com be there? You'll just have to attend and find out...Follow this article's author, J.R. Bookwalter on Twitter

GM's China car JV says H1 auto sales rise (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) – General Motors' (GM.N) car venture in Shanghai said it sold 612,072 vehicles in the first half of the year, up 27.5 percent from a year earlier.

The tally includes 12,067 exported vehicles, Shanghai GM, the Detroit automaker's tie-up with SAIC Motor Corp (600104.SS), said in a statement on its website late on Monday.

In June, the venture sold 104,472 Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles, it said, without providing the year-earlier tally.

How to Use Location Services on a Mac or an iPhone
Mon, Oct 24 @ 11:17 AM
Over the past few years, Apple has brought us many breakthrough location-based features on both the Mac and iOS devices. The first of these features was Find My iPhone, which allows users to search for their lost or stolen device. The newest services, Find My Friends, lets you keep track of family or friends during outings or other events. With these two features, it's clear that being able to easily share your location, or track your device, is the way of the future. What You Need:>> iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5 >> Find My Friends App >> Apple ID linked with iCloud>> Mac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher1. Using Find My iPhone and Mac to Find a Lost or Stolen DeviceIf you have ever misplaced one of your iOS devices, then you can definitely appreciate the services that Apple provides with Find My iPhone (and most recently Find My Mac). To enable these services, you only need an Apple ID.The process for turning on Find My iPhone is the same on any iOS device. To enable Find My iPhone on your iOS devices (including iPod touch and iPad), navigate to Settings > iCloud, and sign in with your Apple ID. After the signing is complete, you will be able to flip the switch for "Find My iPhone" to ON.Compatible Macs will allow you turn on Find My Mac in the iCloud preference pane.Turning Find My Mac on is just as easy. In Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2, navigate to System Preferences > iCloud, and check the box next to "Find My Mac." You may get a notification about allowing location services on your Mac. If you do get an alert, click Allow. After linking your devices to iCloud's Find My iPhone/Mac service, log into iCloud.com with the same Apple ID used to add your devices to the service. After logging in, click on the Find My iPhone icon.Tap on the Refresh button at the top of the Devices list to update the location on-demand.You'll see a screen that shows all of your devices that are linked to the service. Clicking on the small GPS dot that appears on the map will present you with options for tracking down your device. "Play Sound or Send Message" will let you send a push notification to your device that will also play a high-pitched sound to hopefully alert someone. Remote Lock lets you set a passcode on your device so that no one else will be able to unlock your device and begin using it. And, if all else fails, you can perform a Remote Wipe on your device to clear all of the data on your devices. You can do the same with all compatible Macs.2. Using Find My Friends to Keep Track of PeopleFind My Friends is a new application that Apple launched with iOS 5. This application is similar to other location-sharing apps in that lets you subscribe to the location of other iOS devices. These applications are useful when planning a family outing, or a group outting where you need to keep track of a lot of people. There are two types of friendships available in the Find My Friends app: Permanent and Temporary.Tap on the Invite Friends button to begin.Tapping the All tab will let you create a permanent invite that lets you subscribe to location updates from a particular iOS device for an indefinite amount of time.Tapping on the Temporary tab will let you create a temporary friendship that lets you subscribe to updates from someone only for a specified amount of time. During the invitation process, you can schedule the time that the location updates will expire. When that date arrives, the person will be removed from this Temporary section. You can add multiple people to a temporary event by adding more email addresses to the "To:" field. When inviting someone to share their location updates, you will need to type in the email address (or phone number) that is linked to the other person's Apple ID.  You will also be able to type in a message, or if you chose to create a temporary invite, you will be able to specify an event name and the date the updates will end. After your friends or family accept your invitation, they will appear in the All tab. You can tap on your friends or family in the "All" to see a geo-located address and Google map of their location, but the magic really happens when you tap on View Map in a temporary location event. On a Google map, you will be able to see the locations of everyone in the group.Tap on the location button in the toolbar to turn on automatic location updating; otherwise, press the refresh button at the top of the screen to manually update.Follow this article's author, Cory Bohon on Twitter.

Companions Review
Mon, Oct 24 @ 12:27 PM
There are many role-playing games (RPGs) for iOS devices, like Solomon's Keep or Battleheart, but nearly all are focussed on casual gameplay; something you'd pick up for a few minutes to pass the time. Although by no means unique, the iPad-only Companions is cut from a different cloth, and if you're a fan of traditional fantasy RPGs like Wizardry, Dungeon Master, and Bard's Tale, you'll appreciate the depth and breadth of the storyline and gameplay.Familiarize yourself with the tutorial -- where you'll learn each of your four characters' unique abilities -- as this is a complex game that requires time to master and hours to complete. Once you've had enough practice, it'll be time to start the campaign, which unfolds like you're reading a story. After choosing one of three professions for each of your characters, you'll start with a minotaur looking for his father and other missing members of his clan. You later switch to an elf, then a dwarf, and finally an ambitious human mage, and this slow introduction helps you better understand each character. Shortly thereafter, all four meet up and you command them as a team.Matters can get confusing in the heat of battle with the dwarf setting traps, the human casting spells or healing his companions, the elf summoning dragons and shooting arrows, and the minotaur pilling into anything that moves. Thankfully, you can slow down the action by tapping on a sand timer at the top of the screen, and for a few seconds, you'll have time to think more clearly and steer your companions to victory. On that note, you'll probably fail more often than not, as one fallen comrade can end your game. Thankfully, you can save a session at any time, allowing you to go back and try a different strategy. The first map will keep you busy for a few hours, but this is by no means the sole story: the adventure goes on, and you'll be fighting zombies and dragons, as well as working alongside iron golems. There's also a promise of a free additional campaign map featuring the dwarven fortress, which will conclude the campaign in the near future. And if you're intrigued but want to try before you buy, there's a free version available called Companions Lite that includes the training section and first campaign map.The bottom line. This is an immersive role-playing game that will keep you busy for hours, if not days. If you're into casual gameplay, look elsewhere; but if you like depth to your adventures, you may love Companions.Review Synopsis Product:  Companions 1.3.0 Company:  Smuttlewerk Interactive Contact:  http://www.companions-game.com Price:  <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=ApuPaiKIpxg&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fcompanions%252Fid418974698%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30" target="itunes_store">$6.99</a> Requirements:  iPad running iOS 4.2 or later Positives:  Lengthy and immersive gameplay. Monster TRON T3 In-Ear Headphones Review
Mon, Oct 24 @ 6:10 AM
Monster 'phones without the monster priceHeadphones are a personal, subjective thing, and so is one's affinity for the movie TRON. Monster's T3 earbuds are a tie-in with the recent TRON remake—the website boasts that they feature "Disney's futuristic styling and the phosphorous glow of the TRON universe." Well, they don't actually glow, and if we hadn't been informed that they were TRON-related we never would have recognized the silver-and-blue TRON-ish T design on each earbud. But they are pretty cool looking.Monster products have a reputation of being well made but pricey; the T3s are certainly well made but at a mid-range $59.95 price point. Monster says they're targeted for gaming, music, and movies, so we tried them out with all three and were pleased with the all-around performance. The included silicone ear tips create a comfortable noise-isolating seal, and the earbuds deliver respectable, detailed sound across the spectrum, from highs to middles to lows. We could hear all the chaos in Bridesmaids, the pretty soundtrack in artsy iOS game Contre Jour, and all our music sounded good, too. When we blasted a few hip-hop tracks the bass wasn't overpowering, but still had power—nice and balanced.Inspired by the movie TRON, and normal enough for people who don't care. The earbuds are comfortable for long periods, although they did protrude from our ears just enough to prevent us from listening while lying down on either side. The flat cable is a nice touch. It wasn't prone to tangling and didn't transfer noise from rubbing against our clothing. The bottom line. These seem like they'll last a long time, and deliver clear sound with punch. We're a little bummed Monster didn't include their ControlTalk feature for controlling iPod playback and hands-free iPhone calling, which would be more appreciated than the forgettable TRON styling.Review Synopsis Product:  Tron T3 Company:  Monster Contact:  monstercable.com Price:  $59.95 Requirements:  Audio device with a 1/8-inch headphone jack Positives:  Sturdy and well made. Flat headphone cable doesn't transmit noise. Good sound. Reasonably priced. Negatives:  No iPhone/iPod controls or microphone. Score:  4 Great

China probing ConocoPhillips' role in oil spill (AP)

By ELAINE KURTENBACH, AP Business Writer Elaine Kurtenbach, Ap Business Writer – Tue?Jul?5, 6:44?am?ET

SHANGHAI – China's State Oceanic Administration said Tuesday it is investigating ConocoPhillips' role in a recent oil spill and still assessing possible damage to the environment.

The first spill at the Penglai 19-3 oil field off China's eastern coast was detected on June 4 and followed by another on June 17, said a report on the administration's website. The spills, which spread over 840 square kilometers (324 miles) of Bohai Bay, were brought under control by June 19, it said.

"Chinese maritime law enforcement agencies are monitoring the oil spill and will investigate ConocoPhillips in accordance with relevant laws," the regulator said, urging the company to take "urgent measures as soon as possible to reduce the environmental damage from the spill."

Local reports have cited complaints of dead fish, though they said it was unclear if the deaths were caused by the oil. They also have contended that authorities and the company failed to provide enough information on the accident.

The Penglai 19-3 oil field, China's largest offshore field, was jointly developed by ConocoPhillips China and state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corp. The operator of the field is ConocoPhillips China.

Calls to ConocoPhillips seeking comment were not immediately answered. Officials at the Shandong Provincial Oceanic and Fishery Department did not respond to inquiries and calls to CNOOC rang unanswered.

China's worst reported oil spill occurred nearly a year ago, when a pipeline at Dalian, a busy northeastern port, exploded and oil poured into the sea, spreading over at least 165 square miles (430 square kilometers).

Production at the Penglai oil field has been ramped up, with output expected to average 69 million barrels a day of crude oil, over twice the average output of 33 million barrels a day in 2009, ConocoPhillips China says.

Some reports questioned whether the field's location along a very active geologic fault might be partly to blame for the spills.

The State Oceanic Administration said 3,000 meters of sea booms and other devices were deployed to help clean up the spill and the limited amount of oil on the surface as of Monday suggested no significant leaks.

The spill has raised concern over potential long-term impact to the area's very active fisheries industry.

"There are many pollutants in oil, some decompose easily while others do not. If the content is high enough, it can affect people through the food chain," said Zheng Li, an expert at the Oceanic Administration's First Institute of Oceanography, based in the eastern city of Qingdao.

But Zheng said he believed CNOOC had the capacity to resolve the problem, given its experience with earlier accidents.

Researcher Fu Ting contributed to this report.

China understating local govt debt: ratings agency (AFP)

SHANGHAI (AFP) – China may have understated the debt burden of local governments by as much as $541.6 billion, and the proportion of bad loans could be higher than previously forecast, ratings agency Moody's said Tuesday.

In a stern warning, Moody's warned the lack of a plan to tackle bad loans to local governments meant it could downgrade its outlook for Chinese banks to negative.

The agency's findings came after it analysed an audit released in June by China's National Audit Office (NAO), which put the debt held by local governments at 10.7 trillion yuan ($1.65 trillion) as of the end of 2010.

The figure released by the NAO was the equivalent to about 27 percent of China's 2010 gross domestic product of 39.8 trillion yuan.

"We believe that the NAO report is understating the size of the local government loans that could become problematic," the Moody's report said.

Excessive borrowing by authorities to fund infrastructure and other projects has sparked concerns among China's leadership about the risks the loans pose to the financial stability of the world's second-largest economy.

Moody's said it uncovered an additional 3.5 trillion ($541.6 billion) in debt after checking the NAO's figures against reports by Chinese banking regulators.

The agency said the ratio of loans that cannot be paid back could be as high as eight to 12 percent, compared to its previous calculations of between five to eight percent.

"The potential scale of the problem loans at Chinese banks may be closer to our stress case than our base case. This is clearly a negative trend for creditors," Moody's said.

"But, for now, very few of these loans are recorded as NPLs (non-performing loans) by the banks, and it is unclear as to how they, or the Chinese authorities, intend to address the problem."

The ratings agency said it was concerned by the differences between figures given by government agencies and the banks' publicly stated lack of concern about bad loans.

The NAO had said 108.3 billion yuan of total loans had been issued or used improperly, citing methods such as providing fraudulent collateral or diverting the funds raised into capital or real estate markets.

Chinese banks last year loaned huge amounts to provincial financing vehicles -- intermediary agencies through which the governments take out borrowings because they are officially banned from assuming debt directly.

The credit was used to fund construction projects after Beijing called for nationwide efforts to spur the economy on the back of the global financial crisis.

Amnesty slams China on Xinjiang riot anniversary (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) – Amnesty International on Tuesday slammed an ongoing crackdown on mainly Muslim Uighurs in China's far-western Xinjiang, as authorities vowed stability two years after deadly riots rocked the region.

More than 200 people were killed and 1,700 injured -- according to official figures -- when street battles between ethnic Han Chinese and Muslim Uighurs exploded in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi on July 5, 2009.

The unrest, which lasted for days, was largely fuelled by Uighur resentment over China's rule of Xinjiang and marked the worst ethnic violence that the country had seen in decades.

According to Amnesty, hundreds of people have been detained and prosecuted since the riots, with several dozen sentenced to death or executed and many more sentenced to long prison terms.

"The government is not only still muzzling people who speak out about July 2009, it is using its influence outside its borders to shut them up," Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International?s director for Asia-Pacific, said in a statement.

"The general trend towards repression that we see all over China is particularly pronounced in Xinjiang, where the Uighur population has become a minority in its own homeland."

Managers of well-known Uighur websites and journalists have been jailed for posting messages on the protests, or for talking to foreign media, while Beijing has sought the repatriation of those believed to be involved in the unrest from neighbouring Central Asian states, Amnesty said.

The Germany-based World Uighur Congress also denounced the ongoing crackdown and demanded that Beijing allow an independent investigation into the riots and account for all those killed, jailed or executed.

"For many years, the Chinese government has waged an intense and often brutal campaign to repress all forms of Uighur dissent, cracking down on Uighurs' peaceful political, social and religious activities and independent expressions of ethnicity," the group said.

Locals in Urumqi, when contacted from Beijing, said the situation appeared normal on Tuesday, though there was an increased police presence in the city.

Authorities continue to blame "separatists" for the July 2009 unrest.

"We must be self-conscious while standing in the front lines of the anti-separatist struggle and never waver in maintaining the overall political stability of Xinjiang," the region's top Communist Party leader Zhang Chunxian said in remarks posted on his government's website Monday.

"We must always maintain clearheadedness and deeply acknowledge the extremely important and urgent nature of safeguarding stability in Xinjiang."

Zhang appeared late Monday at a street market in the Uighur section of Urumqi and chatted with locals, Xinhua news agency said.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Tuesday defended the government's crackdown, saying the unrest in Xinjiang was organised by terrorists, separatists and religious extremists inside and outside of China.

"The Chinese government, in order to maintain stability and national solidarity, has severely punished the criminals involved in the incident," Hong told reporters.

"At the moment, the society in Xinjiang is stable, the economy is developing and all ethnic groups are living in harmony together."

Asian manufacturing activity slows in June (AFP)

SHANGHAI (AFP) – Manufacturing activity in Asia's emerging economies slowed further in June, data showed Friday, suggesting measures designed to cool explosive growth were taking hold in the region.

Export-dependent nations were also hurt by a continued weakness in demand from crisis-hit Europe and the United States while Japanese suppliers were still recovering from the impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Growth in Chinese production almost stalled while India's figures hit a nine-month low as monetary tightening measures firmly put the brakes on two of the region's biggest and fastest-growing economies.

Taiwan data showed manufacturing activity actually contracted while South Korea was also crimped by inflation-fighting measures.

Beijing has been clamping down on bank lending to tame inflation, which hit a three-year high 5.5 percent in May, and avoid the economy blowing out of control as it has been expanding at nearly 10 percent a year.

China's manufacturing activity fell to an 11-month low of 50.1 in June from 51.6 in May, the British banking giant said in a statement, confirming preliminary data released last week, as Beijing tries to tame soaring costs.

The country's official purchasing managers index also fell for the third straight month to 50.9 in June from 52.0 in May, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said earlier Friday.

A reading above 50 indicates the sector is expanding while a reading below 50 suggests a contraction.

"This implies that policy tightening is working, pointing to a peak of inflation in the coming months," HSBC chief economist Qu Hongbin said in a statement.

The figures will likely fuel concerns that the world's second-largest economy is heading for a hard landing as Beijing -- anxious about inflation's potential to spark social unrest -- tries to rein in food and housing prices.

"The continued easing in June PMI figures, mainly due to inventory adjustments, suggests economic growth is likely to continue to slow," Zhang Liqun, a government analyst, said in the CFLP statement.

Both surveys for China also show inflationary pressures -- a bugbear for policymakers -- eased last month. The official input prices sub-index, which measures the cost of raw materials, fell to 56.7 in June from 60.3 in May.

India's PMI fell to 55.3 in June -- from May's 57.5 -- marking its slowest pace so far this year while input costs rose.

The easing follows several interest rate hikes in the country, where the Congress-led government has vowed to tackle inflation -- even at the cost of slower growth -- to help the hundreds of millions of poverty-stricken.

The central bank raised its key interest rates last month after inflation hit a higher-than-expected 9.06 percent in May, from 8.66 percent the previous month, with food prices rising even faster.

"These numbers confirm that tight capacity and monetary tightening is constraining growth," Leif Eskesen, chief economist for India and Asean at HSBC, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Compounding problems for companies was Japan's March 11 twin disaster, which wrecked supply lines while the stuttering recovery in Europe and the United States from the global downturn also hit demand.

The earthquake and tsunami has "hurt a lot of manufacturers, they are trying to stretch out their inventories", Moody's Economy.com associate economist Alaistair Chan told AFP.

"Also in the medium term you have got a downturn in the global economy."

South Korea's PMI slowed to 51.13 in June from 51.24 in May as Seoul treads a fine line between fighting inflation with interest rate hikes and trying to cap foreign inflows of cash it fears could destabilise the economy.

Manufacturing activity in Taiwan shrank to 49.9 in June from 54.9 in May.

China contests remarks by UN rights chief on Sudan (AP)

GENEVA – A Chinese diplomat in Geneva says the U.N.'s top human rights official went too far by criticizing China for failing to arrest Sudan's president.

Xia Jingge said in an email Friday that China is "strongly opposed" to remarks a day earlier by U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

Pillay told reporters she was "disappointed" that China welcomed Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir during a visit this week rather than arrest him to ensure he stands trial on war crimes charges.

The diplomat also said Pillay's remarks have "no legal basis" since China hasn't joined the International Criminal Court.

He said China also has "serious reservations" about the case alleging al-Bashir is responsible for atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region.

Beat the Traffic+ Review
Thu, Oct 20 @ 6:28 AM
Nobody likes being stuck in traffic, but outside of knowing backroads specific to your location, there's not much drivers in urban or populous areas can do about it. Luckily, Beat the Traffic+, the four-dollar companion to Triangle Software's free app, is here to help, using the GPS power of your iOS device to show you the fastest possible route to your destination. How it works is simple: you can view real-time or predicted traffic patterns specific to your GPS location (routes are color-coded from green to red by order of speediness), which is convenient enough on its own. The "plus" comes in by allowing you to customize "My Traffic" locations that let you create and choose from a list of commonly-visited destination routes, view regularly updated surveillance shots from most highways, and use the forecast planner to pick the best roads for planning trips.Currently the app supports 34 major cities or metropolitan areas, and picks up construction, accident, or weather-related problems that might bring your trip to a grinding halt. The only catch is that these extra features, though initially free for two weeks, cost $19.99 a year after your trial period has expired. However, you can still access all the features available in "plus" with the free app -- albeit without the personalization. The bottom line. Whether you're a "plus" subscriber or not, though, Beat the Traffic is a pretty worthwhile app if you're an iPhone user who spends a lot of time behind the wheel.Review Synopsis Product:  Beat the Traffic+ 1.2.1 Company:  Triangle Software Contact:  http://beatthetraffic.com Price:  <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=ApuPaiKIpxg&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fbeat-thetraffic-plus%252Fid405597660%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30" target="itunes_store">$3.99</a> Requirements:  iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.1 or later Positives:  App is really easy to use. Includes a lot of unique and helpful features. Negatives:  Subscription service is only worthwhile if you travel a lot. You can't access all features outside of your GPS location. Score:  4 Great

Law & Apple: Samsung Wins, Fires Up New Lawsuit and HTC Loses Early Decision
Thu, Oct 20 @ 8:02 AM
As the major infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung in the United States begins to narrow its focus, Samsung begins maneuvering to block the sale of the iPhone 4S overseas. And HTC, which in May asked the International Trade Commission to ban the importation of the Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad in the United States, gets an answer -- though likely not the one they were hoping for. All of this and more in today's Law and Apple.Apple vs. SamsungU.S. District Judge Lucy Koh dismissed several of Apple's antitrust claims against Samsung, including the claim that Samsung misrepresented its intent to license certain patents on fair terms. According to the ruling, Apple can revise its complaint and resubmit the claims. This is a small win for Samsung, though of course it was hoping to have all of Apple's antitrust claims dismissed. Many of the more significant claims are still under consideration, and the fact that Apple can resubmit tweaked versions of the dismissed claims must be a disappointment for Samsung. And the elephant in the room remains, as Koh did not yet rule on the larger request of Apple to block Samsung from selling its Galaxy mobile devices in the United States.Samsung, apparently eager to escalate the legal battles between the two companies, opened new lawsuits in Japan, Australia, France, and Italy to block the sale of the new iPhone 4S in those countries.  We Are Only Hurting Ourselves. The legal battles between Apple and Samsung appear to be intensifying, though several analysts believe that a resolution is not only still possible, but just around the corner. Recent reports indicate that Apple will use Samsung to manufacture the alleged A6 processor chip for the next iPhone, a move which would underscore the fact that both companies need each other for continued success, and these legal disputes have the capacity to hurt the bottom lines of both companies, regardless of who wins and who loses.Apple vs. HTCHTC was swinging for the fences earlier this spring with a massive ITC claim against Apple that aimed to block the sale of iPods, iPhones, and iPads in the United States. The company may have just struck out, though, as ITC administrative judge Charles Bullock found "no violation" by Apple of the four HTC patents critical to the claim. The ruling stated that the HTC patents involving power management and phone dialing were in fact valid, but that Apple did not infringe on them in any way.In February, a full ITC committee will decide whether or not to uphold the administrative judge's opinion.Apple can still sell iOS devices in the United States. Phew. To the surprise of no one,  this ruling will allow the continued sale of the Apple mobile devices in the United States. Adrian writes the weekly Law & Apple column for MacLife.com. How to Restrict Functions in iOS
Thu, Oct 20 @ 1:01 PM
Restrictions in iOS work simliarly to Parental Controls in OS X. It's an easy way to restrict unauthorized users from accessing certain functions in iOS, and keep the kids away from inappropriate content. To begin, head over to Settings > General > Restrictions and tap "Enable Restrictions" to set a password and get started restricting functionality.1. Restricting Built-in AppsAfter enabling Restrictions, under the Allow section in the Restrictions settings, you will see switches for Safari, YouTube, Camera, FaceTime, iTunes, Ping, Installing Apps, and Deleting Apps.Flip the switch to turn off the selected functionality.Simply flip the switch from ON to OFF and the functionality will be disabled for the switched function. When the function is turned off, the application will be hidden from visibility on the Home Screen.2. Restricting ChangesIn addition to built-in applications, you can also restrict changes to Location, Accounts, and Find My Friends.Location-based restrictions are particularly important if you wish to disable certain location functions.Tapping on Location in the Allow Changes section will let you Allow or Disallow changes in order to prevent new apps from using location services. You can disable Location services completely, or on a per-application basis.Tapping on Accounts or Find My Friends will also allow you to Allow Changes or Don't Allow Changes for those functions. In this section, a purple location icon will appear next to an item that is currently using your location; a gray icon will appear beside items that have used location info in the past 24-hours.Scrolling down to the bottom of the page will let you change System Services settings. From this screen, you can disable Cell Network Search, Compass Calibration, Diagnostics & Usage, Location-based iAds, Setting Time Zone, and Traffic.3. Restricting ContentUnder the Allowed Content section, you can set restrictions for Ratings for Music & Podcasts, Movies, TV Shows, and Apps. Tapping on any of these functions will allow you to set a maximum rating to allow. In the Ratings For section, you can select the rating system to use; by default it will be set to your country. Also in this section, you can disable In-App Purchases, and set the time that purchases are allowed after the Restriction password has been entered. You can select 15 minutes, or immediately for the time that the password is required.4. Restricting Game CenterReduce Game Center functions with just a tap.The last options for Restrictions are the Game Center settings. In this section, you can disable multiplayer games and adding friends. Follow this article's author, Cory Bohon on Twitter.

Thursday Recap: AT&T Updates, iOS 5 Developer World Tour, Apple's Missing LTE
Thu, Oct 20 @ 1:49 PM
You made it through Wednesday and the weekend will be here soon enough, so give yourself a pat on the back! It was also a challenging day for some of Apple's partners, with a Swedish carrier predicting gloom and doom for Cupertino over the lack of LTE in its handsets, and AT&T swinging back and forth with good news about iPhone 4S activations and less good news for the last quarter overall. Here's what's making news for Thursday, October 20, 2011.iPhone 4S Includes Both GPS and Russian GLONASS SupportHere's a bit of trivia for iPhone 4S owners: Did you know your shiny new device comes with not two but but three methods of acquiring your position? Wi-Fi triangulation and the common GPS aside, the new device also quietly adds GLONASS, an acronym for the Russian GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema first launched in 1976. According to 9to5Mac, the Russkies created the system in order to reduce their reliance on U.S.-based GPS technology, but with the Cold War well behind us, it appears everyone gains by having both satellite signals beaming into our iPhone 4S -- and is likely to help expand the handset's domination into the former Soviet Union as well. With No New iPhone Over The Summer, AT&T Quarterly Profits DipOnce exclusive U.S. iPhone carrier AT&T is feeling a bit of a sting in their quarterly profits without a new Apple handset over the summer, even though the company passed the 100 million subscriber mark by adding an additional 2.1 million. AllThingsD is reporting wireless data revenue grew 18 percent to $857 million, with total revenue ringing the registers up to $31.5 billion, just shy of the $31.62 billion analysts were expecting. So how many iPhones did the company move last quarter? "Only" 2.7 million, which is their lowest level in more than a year.Swedish Carrier Predicts Apple Will Be "Run Over" Without 4G LTE9to5Mac is reporting on claims made by the senior vice president of Swedish carrier TeliaSonera over Apple's decision to ignore 4G LTE (at least for now) is a "bad mistake" that will open the company to being "run over by the others" -- meaning other handset makers who are tripping over themselves to adopt LTE early on. Of course, Apple has been here before with the original iPhone in 2007, which used the more available EDGE for wireless data rather than 3G, which came the following year.AT&T Activates One Million iPhone 4S HandsetsOn the heels of AT&T's dip in quarterly profits (see above), the company managed to find a silver lining in their dark cloud thanks to the iPhone 4S. The carrier announced that more than a million of Apple's new handsets were activated as of Tuesday, which marks AT&T's most successful iPhone launch ever. So, things are looking up for their next quarterly report due in January, at least...Apple Announces iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour 2011Now that iOS 5 is out in the wild, Apple has announced a nine-city world tour to help developers get the most out of the new technology. The iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour 2011 events kick off in Berlin, Germany on November 2 and wrap up in Austin, Texas on January 23, hitting several other cities in Europe, Asia, North and South America along the way. According to the company's website, the London event on November 7 and the New York City event on January 13 are already booked up, so you might want to register today if you want to get your foot in the door.Follow this article's author, J.R.
