How to Take Better iPhone Photos in iOS 4
Wed, Oct 12 @ 5:11 AM
My iPhone photos always come out blurry or dark. What am I doing wrong? The good news is you probably don't need glasses. The iPhone's camera has improved dramatically over the years, but its pictures can still turn out blurry if your hands are moving too much while you shoot. One common cause of Jiggling Camera Syndrome is tapping the Camera app's button to snap a picture. Since the picture is taken the moment the button is released, touch and hold the button until you line up your shot, then gently lift your finger, or slide it off the button, to take the photo.Tapping your subject can get better results than the iPhone's autofocus feature. When shooting dark or high-contrast scenes, your iPhone doesn't always know best. Instead of trusting its autofocus feature, try tapping on or around your subject before taking a picture. The camera will adjust both its focus and lighting settings, and this can bring out shadowy details you might have missed. If that doesn't remedy the symptoms, tap the button in the upper-left corner of the Camera app's screen to set its flash to Auto or On. Above all, experiment with your settings and take several shots to ensure a winner.

Apple Unleashes iOS 5 for Existing Device Owners
Wed, Oct 12 @ 10:15 AM
If you own an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, this is no ordinary Wednesday. That's because the overlords in Cupertino have blessed us with the release of iOS 5, the latest and greatest version of their mobile operating system which comes with more than 200 new features you're sure to love.Apple has officially pushed out iOS 5 on Wednesday as promised, following a trail of companion updates in the last 24 hours which included the required iTunes 10.5 on Tuesday as well as iCloud.com and the new Find My Friends and AirPort Utility apps this morning. But enough about those -- here's a recap of what you'll be getting as you download iOS 5 via iTunes while reading this, perhaps the very last time you'll need to do that procedure. That's because iOS 5 introduces a new "PC-free" initiative, including Wi-Fi syncing with iTunes, backup and restore and finally, at long last, the inclusion of over the air updates for future iOS updates (which presumably includes the iOS 6 and beyond). Acknowledging that many iOS device owners don't own a computer -- which has been required prior to this release -- the cord is finally cut and users can mostly enjoy a wireless existence from here on out.Other standout iOS 5 features include the new Notification Center, which finally addresses one of the more annoying aspects of earlier versions: Those pop-up notifications that tend to stop everything in their tracks until you act upon them. Now, iOS 5 will gently nudge you with incoming notifications, and users can choose to ignore them or act upon them with a tap.iMessage also promises to revolutionize instant messaging between iOS users. Seamlessly built into the existing Messages app, iPhone users now have the option of communicating via SMS or MMS with their carrier or with other iPod touch and iPad users using Wi-Fi (or 3G data, in the case of the iPhone and iPad).Other features include Newsstand for organizing your periodical subscriptions, Reminders so you won't forget upcoming events, built-in Twitter for sending tweets from any of the built-in apps (as well as third-party apps that utilize the feature), tons of new Camera and Photos app changes, tabbed browsing and Read It Later mode in Mobile Safari and lots and lots more.So what are you waiting for? Hit up that fresh new copy of iTunes 10.5 and get downloading for your device (or devices) right now.Follow this article's author, J.R. Bookwalter on Twitter

The Always Current iOS 5 Tips and Tricks Guide
Wed, Oct 12 @ 10:29 AM
iOS 5 is an incredibly complex operating system, filled with hundreds of innovative, undocumented little touches, just waiting for you to stumble on. Here's an updated, ever-constant filling of tips and tricks to help you master Apple's latest iOS to the fullest. Keep checking back and be sure to bookmark us for future reference.

How to Use the Notification Center in iOS 5
Wed, Oct 12 @ 11:18 AM
After installing iOS 5, you'll notice that the entire push notification system has changed. Instead of only displaying one notification at a time, you are able to get multiple, unobtrusive notifications. We'll walk you through the Notification Center and get you working with the new push notifications in no time.1. Lock Screen NotificationsOne of the biggest changes is the push notifications on the lock screen. Previously, you were limited to how many notifications would appear on the lock screen. Not any longer. Now, multiple notifications will stack on top of each other, allowing you to see all of your push notifications on your lock screen. Best part of all is the small icon that lets you know which application the notification came from. Dragging this icon from the left to the right of the screen will unlock the device and take you right to the application the notification came from.2. Notifications AnywhereThe new unobtrusive notification system will not interrupt your video game, phone call, or music experience. Instead of popping up a notification dialog, a new animation will appear from the top, gently rolling down the notification within view. You can tap on this notification to go straight to the application it came from, or ignore it until you have a chance to view it. 3. Notifications, Notifications, and more NotificationsTo get a history of your unread push notifications, simply swipe downward from the clock at the top of your iOS device's screen. This will drag down the new Notification Center, a new screen that will display all unread notifications, upcoming calendar events, new mail message, and more. You can scroll through the notifications by swiping, just as you would in any other iOS application. When you see a notification that you wish to read in the application, just tap on it. The notification will then disappear from the Notification Center and the application that the notification originated from will open.To clear the push notifications without tapping to open the application, simply tap on the small "X" in the application heading, and then tap on the resulting "Clear" button. The notifications from that application will be erased from the Notification Center. 4. Notification Center SettingsThere are a few settings that you can tweak in the Notification Center. To see all of the notifications, head to System Preferences > Notifications. From here, you can sort applications "Manually" or "By Time." You can also set which types of notifications you receive from certain applications by tapping on the application icon in this area. The application settings enables to check the application and how it's notifications will appear in the Notification Center, as well as how many items you want to display. You can also set the Alert Style by selecting from None, Banners, and Alerts. In addition, you can determine whether the Badge App Icon will display, whether there is a preview of the push notification, how many times the alert will repeat, and whether the notification will appear on the Lock Screen. As you can see from the settings, Apple now gives the user full control over how notifications display on their iOS 5 devices.Follow this article's author, Cory Bohon on Twitter.

How to Keep Track of Tasks with Reminders in iOS 5
Wed, Oct 12 @ 12:08 PM
Since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, iCal users have been begging for a simpler way to sync their to-do lists from iCal to their devices. It has been a little more than four years, but Apple has finally implemented a better system natively into iOS.Reminders is an application that lets you see to-do items from iCal, Outlook, and it can even sync your lists with iCloud. To-do items can be set with due dates and even locations. Location-based reminders will send you an alert whenever you are near the destination that the item is associated with. Read on to find out how to use this helpful new app.1. Creating a To-do ListWhen you first open the application, the Reminders application look familiar to many Apple iOS applications. To create a new to-do list, tap on the Edit button in the top-left corner of the app. Under the different sections (On My iPad, or any iCloud account), you will see a button for "Create New List". Tap on this button, and then type out the name of your new list. When you have finished, tap the Done button in the top-left corner.2. Add an ItemTo add an item to the to-do list that we just created, simply tap on it, and then tap on the plus button in the list. This will show the iOS keyboard, allowing you to type the item. Press the return key on the keyboard to save the item and go on to a new line. This allows for rapid entry of new todo list items.3. Set Reminders and Other OptionsAfter you have entered an item into your to-do list, you can tap on the item to get the Details pop up dialog. This dialog allows you to edit the item title, add a reminder, set the priority, change the to-do list the item appears in, and also lets you add notes. In the Remind Me section, tap the "On a Day" switch to turn this feature on, and then set the date you wish to be reminded in the resulting box.You can similarly set the priority to be None, Low, Medium, or High. Unfortunately, this priority setting does not change the weight on the items in the Reminders application, but if you sync with iCloud, iCal, or Outlook, they will appear weighted on the list depending on the priority (highest priority will appear at top).4. Add a Location ReminderTo add a location-based reminder for an item, tap on the item after adding it to your reminders, and the flip the switch to ON for the "At a location". Your iOS device will determine your current location, or you can change the address by tapping on it.After configuring the address, you can tap either "When I Leave" or "When I Arrive". After tapping one of these options, a geo-fence will be set around the location. Whenever you leave or arrive at the location, a local push notification for the reminder will be sent to your device.Follow this article's author, Cory Bohon on Twitter.

How to Use the Built-in Twitter Integration in iOS 5
Wed, Oct 12 @ 1:27 PM
iOS 5 now has full Twitter integration, which may or may not become a time consuming bad habit. Regardless, iOS 5 lets you sign in to your Twitter account once and enable you to tweet directly from Safari, Photos, Camera, YouTube, or Maps. It'll also let you update your contacts with Twitter usernames and profile pictures. We'll show you how easy it is to set up and use Twitter in iOS 5.1. Set Up TwitterTo begin setting up the iOS 5 Twitter integration, head to System Preferences > Twitter. Once there, tap on the Add Account button. From the resulting page, enter your user name and password. When you have finished, click the Sign In button. If you are new to Twitter, press the Create New Account button and a new dialog will walk you through the new account creation process. 2. Update Your ContactsAfter you have signed in, press the Update Contacts button. This will search your Address Book for contacts that are on Twitter (it searches by both email address and mobile phone number), and then automatically adds a Twitter username field and updates the profile pictures of the associated contacts. After tapping on the button, the process will take a few seconds depending on how many contacts you have stored on your device. If you manage your contacts through iCloud, the profile pictures and Twitter usernames will automatically be synced to the cloud.3. Tweeting from iOS 5Tweeting from iOS 5 is as easy as tapping on the share button in many of the built-in applications. Currently, you can share to Twitter using the following built-in applications:- Safari- Photos- Camera- YouTube- MapsWe'll show you how to do this in the built-in Photos application. To begin, tap on any photo that you wish to share, and then tap on the Share button in the toolbar. From the options, select Tweet.A new dialog will pop open, with the photo attached. Apple's Not Done Yet: Tons of iOS App Updates Waiting For You Today
Wed, Oct 12 @ 4:18 PM
If you love software updates, it's like Christmas morning in October for Apple product owners. In addition to this morning's new iOS apps, the folks in Cupertino are busy pushing out iOS 5 compatibility updates for almost everything they've released -- including Remote, Find My iPhone, iMovie and the trio of iWork apps. There's a gaggle of fun awaiting you in iTunes this fine Wednesday -- as if the steady stream of iOS 5 compatibility updates from third-party developers isn't enough to keep your internet connection busy, Apple has updated almost everything they've released to date for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Here's a quick summary in case you've missed them.Find My iPhoneNever mind the fact it can actually find your iPad or iPod touch as well, the app is now updated to version 1.3 which adds the ability to also find your Mac via iCloud as well as requesting an email when an offline device comes online and is located.iMovieThe handheld video editing app gets a minor 1.2.2 update to address similarly small issues as well as expanding support for videos imported from external cameras.iWork: Pages, Numbers and KeynoteClocking in at version 1.5, Apple's mobile iWork suite now allows for Documents in the Cloud storage, downloading documents to a Mac or PC via the iCloud website in various other formats, drag and drop from iCloud.com and plenty of bug fixes and enhancements across the board.RemoteApple's iTunes and Apple TV controller for iOS has been updated for compatibility with iOS 5 as well as "additional stability and performance improvements." We love those!Follow this article's author, J.R. Bookwalter on Twitter

Apple Releases Free Cards, iTunes Movie Trailers iOS Apps
Wed, Oct 12 @ 4:45 PM
Haven't had enough free apps from Apple for one day? Well saddle up and hit the App Store, partner -- there's more gold to be found in them thar hills, with the promised Cards app arriving for the iPhone as well as a new universal iTunes Movie Trailers app for enjoying previews of Hollywood's finest.Apple has pushed out two more new apps on Wednesday after releasing Find My Friends and AirPort Utility prior to the release of iOS 5 today. One of them is Cards, which was announced at last week's "Let's talk iPhone" event, but the other was something of a pleasant surprise: An app dedicated to watching movie trailers posted on iTunes.Cards arrives right on cue, promising to help you create and mail beautifully crafted cards personalized with your own text and photos, right from your iPhone or iPod touch. The app includes 21 designs which can be customized with your personal message and photo, and U.S.-bound creations will get a push notification when they've been delivered -- only $2.99 anywhere in the United States or $4.99 anywhere else in the world, and those prices include postage. The free Cards app is a 19MB download from the App Store compatible with all devices running iOS 5 or later -- but for some strange reason, it's not a universal app so using it on the iPad won't be an ideal situation. The same cannot be said of the free iTunes Movie Trailers app that Apple also released today, which is indeed a universal build for checking out the latest Hollywood has to offer from your iOS device. Now that it's here, we're left wondering what took them so long to make something like this available in the first place!iTunes Movie Trailers is a 2.8MB download now available from the App Store and requires iOS 5 or later.Follow this article's author, J.R. Wednesday Recap: iPhone 4S Reviews, Photo & Apple TV Updates, Adobe CS5.5 Promotion
Wed, Oct 12 @ 5:15 PM
The big news of the today is undoubtedly iOS 5 and iCloud, but Apple and its third-party developers have been pushing out updates and little pre-Halloween tricks and treats all day long as well. But that's not the only thing going on for this mid-October hump day -- here's the rest of the news for Wednesday, October 12, 2011.It's A Winner: iPhone 4S Reviews Are InLate Tuesday night, the first reviews of the iPhone 4S started pouring out and as you can imagine, they're overwhelming positive for a device that was met with less enthusiasm at its debut a mere week ago. A million preorder customers on the first day can't be wrong, and the reviewers tend to agree. MacRumors has the best roundup of reviews for the new handset, including TechCrunch, This Is My Next, AllThingsD, The New York Times and others.Engadget Release Free Distro Magazine App for iPadThe folks over at Engadget have a cool new tablet app available for the iPad today called Distro. If you're familiar with Flipboard or Zite, you'll immediately get the concept here, except Distro is "hand-crafted by the Engadget team" and only pulls in the best content from that particular venue. The 2.6MB app is free, so it's certainly worth a look for iOS 4.2 or later users.Sprint, Verizon iPhone 4S Models Feature Unlocked SIM -- Sort OfLate Tuesday night, Macworld followed up its iPhone 4S review with a report detailing how CDMA carriers Sprint and Verizon Wireless will allow the GSM SIM card slot to be unlocked on their devices -- a distinct advantage over AT&T for international travelers averse to paying inflated roaming charges. Unfortunately, Sprint has since gone on the record with Ars Technica, claiming that while international roaming is indeed supported with "the appropriate monthly plan," the SIM card slot is not truly unlocked -- as in, you can't stick another SIM card into it and go about your business. Kind of a bummer, but still better than nothing for those of you choosing CDMA carriers.Adobe Offers 20 Percent Off CS5.5 Update for Previous UsersNot content to let Apple hog all of the software news today, Adobe pushed out a press release detailing a new promotion for the company's Creative Suite 5.5 products. If you already own CS2, CS3 or CS4 and haven't upgraded yet, you can get a nice 20 percent discount off those upgrade prices through December 31, 2011. Of course, the deal isn't valid just anywhere -- you'll need to hit up Adobe's online store to take advantage of it.iPhoto, Aperture and Apple TV Updated for iCloudYou're probably already aware that iCloud was released earlier today, but did you know you'll need to update a ton of stuff to truly take advantage of it? In addition to OS X Lion 10.7.2 and iOS 5, the second-generation Apple TV now has a version 4.4 update which adds Photo Stream as well as new content from the National Hockey League and Wall Street Journal Live. That update also provides AirPlay mirroring for wireless playback from your iOS 5 device, and can be downloaded directly from your black ATV.Last but not least, iPhoto 9.2 and Aperture 3.2 are both available now, providing iCloud Photo Stream integration as well as a nice range of bug fixes for Apple's consumer and pro photo apps. Those updates can be found in the Mac App Store (assuming you bought one or both there), or via the Software Update mechanism after you've applied OS X Lion 10.7.2.Follow this article's author, J.R. Edge Extended Review
Wed, Oct 12 @ 6:21 AM
Most people probably aren't aware of Mobigames incredible iOS game, Edge, from the early days of the App Store. That's because the game was tied up in a major legal battle that kept it off the store for huge swaths of time (synopsis: the gaming industry's most infamous patent troll, Tim Langdell, sues the crap out of anything with the word "Edge" in it, claiming he owns the copyright because his company is named Edge Games.)However, now that Langdell got put in his place after trying to sue Electronic Arts over the game Mirror's Edge, Mobigame is free to release its much lauded puzzle platformer games. In short, this is very good news for iOS gamers. Edge Extended is the best puzzle-platformer that we've played in a long time. Since, well, the original Edge.Edge Extended begins as a deceptively simple puzzle game. You move your little block through the game world by sliding your finger across the screen to topple it over. Swiping, then holding your finger against the screen makes the block "run." And for a few levels, that's about it. You navigate simple puzzles, and the levels never take longer than two minutes and a couple attempts. However, about 15 levels in, Edge Extended proves those levels were merely a tutorial for what was to come. The levels get much more complex, and the game introduces new sections that are based more on skill and agility. For instance, balancing the cube on its edge makes it immune to the effects of gravity. So you'll need to utilize that skill to stay alive if, say, the floor drops out from under you. Clinging to the wall for a split second may be your only chance at survival. However, Edge Extended isn't even close to being done yet. Even later in the game, perspective becomes a gameplay mechanic all its own. The game's world of blocks and squares becomes a world of illusions in the skilled hands of Mobigame's level designers. The levels, which once were nothing more than background, become a deathtrap maze. The bottom line. Edge Extended is an absolutely superb game that will make you think and constantly challenge you to improve. It's also a perfect fit for the iOS platform, with flawless controls -- it's on par with iOS instant classics like Cut the Rope.Review Synopsis Product: Edge Extended 1.0.3 Company: Mobigame Contact: http://www.mobigame.net/ Price: $2.99 Requirements: iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 3.0 or later. Positives: Devious puzzles, great level design, tons of unique gameplay. Negatives: Somewhat short, very little visual variety. Score: 5 Awesome

Find My Friends App Goes Live for iOS 5 Users (Updated)
Wed, Oct 12 @ 6:22 AM
Apple's busy day continues, with the company's new Find My Friends app going live in the App Store ahead of iOS 5 and iCloud. Now you'll never lose track of your friends and loved ones -- assuming they have the good sense to also have an iOS device, that is.Apple has released their new Find My Friends app to the iOS App Store on Wednesday morning ahead of iOS 5 and iCloud. Developers currently running the iOS 5 gold master can grab it now by heading to iCloud.com from their device and tapping "Install Find My Friends," but the app should start showing up for everyone later in the day as well."Find My Friends allows you to easily locate your friends and family from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch," the app description reads. "Install this free app on your iOS 5 device and sign in with the Apple ID you use with iCloud. Adding a friend is easy -- just send a request to see their location. Once your friend accepts using the Find My Friends app, you will then be able to see that friend's location on a list or on a map."As mentioned during last week's "Let's talk iPhone" event, one of the great things about Find My Friends is the ability to share your location for only a limited period of time with a group of friends -- great for those occasions where you're all together in the same city or large event and want to keep tabs on one another.Find My Friends is now available on the App Store; the free, universal app is a 10.4MB download and requires iOS 5 and an iCloud account.Follow this article's author, J.R. Apple Releases iOS AirPort Utility App for PC-Free Setup (Updated)
Wed, Oct 12 @ 6:39 AM
iOS 5 ushers in a new "PC-free" era for Apple's mobile devices, with Cupertino acknowledging that many owners are using their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch without a computer. To aid such users, the company has also released a new AirPort Utility app for setting up and managing their AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule without a computer as well.Apple has just pushed out a free AirPort Utility app for iOS, which will help iOS 5 device users set up and manage their networks without the need for a Mac or PC. At this writing the app is only available to existing iOS 5 users, where it can be found by accessing your Wi-Fi network via the Settings app and tapping on the new "Manage this Network" button, which whisks you away to the App Store and presents the new app for download."Use AirPort Utility to manage your Wi-Fi network and AirPort base stations, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule -- right from your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch," the app description explains. "See a graphical overview of your Wi-Fi network and devices. Change base station and network settings, or manage advanced features such as security modes, wireless channels and more."According to the release notes for the app, you'll need an 802.11n Wi-Fi base station to use the app, but thankfully that includes almost all of the models released in recent years. Features include the ability to restart or restore a base station, update the base station firmware when available, manage DHCP reservations and port mappings and easily access your IP address, DNS servers and router addresses.AirPort Utility is a 4.5MB download and the free app is also universal so it works equally well on an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Of course, the app requires iOS 5, which should start rolling out to users today.Follow this article's author, J.R. Bookwalter on Twitter
