Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 4TB Review
Mon, Oct 31 @ 6:19 AM
Huge storage in a svelte, glossy packageI have a confession to make: I'm a document pack rat. In all other areas of my life I'm meticulously organized, but when it comes to files and folders, my stuff is all over the place. Digital spring-cleaning is not my forte, which is why I've got a bunch of portable hard drives strewn about with various data. Thankfully, Seagate's 4TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk will let me consolidate onto one single hard drive with enough space to back up my Mac and iOS devices and store my media files. The 4TB GoFlex Desk is just a bit slimmer than its smaller-capacity predecessor, and has tiny LED lights on the front to let you know when room is running out. Annoyingly, the GoFlex Desk can be easily knocked over on shaky desks—not the kind of thing you want to experience with a platter-based hard drive. The drive connects via USB 3.0—it'll work on a 2.0 port, but you won't see any speed increase, though a $50 adapter will let you plug in using FireWire 800.How do they pack 4TB of storage into a 6.2x4.9x1.8-inch enclosure? The drive comes formatted as NTFS right out of the box, and Seagate provides the Paragon NTFS driver needed to use the drive interchangeably between Windows and the Mac. The only caveat is that you'll need to always have this application running in the background to read and write to the drive. The trade off is that the drive works with virtually any machine, so data hoarders can access their files and folders from any computer—or you can reformat it with Disk Utility, of course. Inside, there's a standard Seagate 7200rpm hard drive with read and write speeds of 33MB/s and 40MB/s, respectively. The transfer speeds between the Mac and the drive are limited to USB 2.0 numbers, but now is as good a time as any to think about picking up a knitting habit while you wait for this drive to sync all of your data. The bottom line. If you need a lot of backup space and can't see yourself bothering with the convoluted nature of a RAID, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the best alternative.Review Synopsis Product: FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Drive Company: Seagate Contact: seagate.com Price: $249.99 Requirements: USB 2.0, Paragon NTFS driver (included) or Disk Utility to format the drive Positives: Massive space without setting up a RAID. Works well for folks who use both Macs and PCs. Negatives: Enclosure too narrow, which makes it prone to tipping over. FireWire 800 adapter will cost you another $50. Score: 3.5 Good

The Secret of Chateau de Moreau Review
Mon, Oct 31 @ 1:08 PM
The Secret of Chateau de Moreau appears to have promise on first glance. It's a point-and-click mystery in a lush European setting, with somewhat muted anime-style sensibilities. Ostensibly, you've seen this plot before: a young boy, Antoine, is summoned to the estate where his late stepfather has died. Shortly after Antoine and his family, a diverse cast of Clue-like characters, learn foul play was involved in the elder statesman Moreau's death, it's revealed that the boy is sole heir to the family's inheritance. As these things tend to go, Antoine is fingered as the killer, and it's your job to prove his innocence.Sadly, that seems to create a bit of a logical fallacy. Antoine has been away from the titular chateau since he was a boy, with no contact from virtually anyone in his family. There's more than meets the eye here, sure, and it'd be wonderful if you could pass off the abrupt change on the behavior of the game's characters following the reveal at Moreau's will reading. That's not the case, however.Rather than following a logical plot line of making Antoine one of several suspects, everyone instantly turns on you, seemingly because of The Secret of Chateau de Moreau's execrable translation. Riddled with typos and localized in only the basest sense, any sense of differing personalities among characters, let alone more complex ideas like motivation -- seemingly important distinctions to make in a mystery game -- are completely lost. And when a game's interaction consists of 'moving' from one overhead map to the next, tapping various items in rooms, conversationally investigating your fellow house guests, and solving puzzles (all on mostly static screens), you'd better hope the narrative is interesting enough to keep you playing. Instead, every character in the game comes off as overly aloof, obnoxiously childlike, or cartoonishly angry or aggressive. With a vibe like that of Nintendo DS great Hotel Dusk: Room 215, I really wanted to like this one more, but neither the gameplay nor anything else about it is compelling in the slightest. The bottom line. If there's a secret to Chateau de Moreau, it's that the writing and translation are so amateurishly bad that it entirely sucks any enjoyment from the game. Functional mechanics don't constitute a worthwhile experience.Review Synopsis Product: The Secret of Chateau de Moreau 1.0.0 Company: Four Thirty Three Contact: http://secret.game4u.co.kr/eng/main/main.jsp Price: $4.99 Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.1.2 or later Positives: Great art style. Decent puzzles. Numerous endings to unlock. Negatives: Abysmal translation leaves players without motivation to continue (or much of an idea of what's going on). Nothing very original about the adventure. Interactive novel approach isn't for everyone. Score: 1.5 Lame
